Trauma comes in many shapes and forms. A deeply distressing and disturbing experience in your life can have many negative effects such as feeling numb or like you’re just “going through the motions,” deep depression and sadness, or feeling “broken.” But you are not alone in feeling this way. I understand the power of trauma and how it can destroy you, overtaking your mind and your body. It’s a wound that changes a person. Especially if you don’t let it out. It finds unhealthy ways. The trauma can overpower you and take control. But you can become "unbroken."

I also developed a passion for dissociative disorders and their relationship to trauma, stress, and neurodiversity.
Hi! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Oregon and have been practicing since 2019. Prior to this, I earned my certification as an Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC I) in 2014 while working with unhoused folks in a shelter in Corvallis setting providing wrap-around services to mandated and self-referred clients in addictions and domestic violence intervention. I grew up in Oakland CA, and for those who have never been, social justice and social welfare are constantly relevant topics in education and in passing

It is from this empowered space that you will then be able to explore and process past experiences, trauma, and the stories and patterns you have been living from in order to discover healing and growth for yourself and move forward with hope and purpose.
Life can be stressful, challenging, and overwhelming at times. You may be feeling stuck, uncertain, or burnt out and deeply desire change, but are struggling to make the change you want to experience. You may be in a transition point in your life, and are unsure of what to do or how to claim your power. You may have experienced discrimination, microaggressions, racism, and systemic or gendered oppression.

Sometimes you reach a point in your life where ongoing stress and/or the cumulative effects of trauma interfere with your relationships and disrupt your day to day functioning in the world.
My goal in therapy is to help you achieve a deeper understanding of why you may struggle to cope with stress and anxiety or make the desired behavioral changes you identify as needed in your life. I will work with you to explore your goals and motives, while learning about the neurobiological underpinnings of what we understand as our human "fight, flight of freeze" responses, which can often sabotage our ability to respond in ways that avoid exacerbating our situation and/or damaging our relationships with others. Together we will explore how you can learn to identify and short-circuit your emotional triggers.

My training in Western psychotherapy gives me a deep understanding of the brain processes behind depression, anxiety, shame, addiction, PTSD, and relationship problems.
However you are feeling at this moment, you have deep, natural sources of resilience inside you. My job as a therapist is to help you tap into the resources of your mind, body, and spirit, so that you can take charge of your own healing and growth. Often, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors causing us the most difficulty right now have their roots in old coping strategies that once helped us to survive and care for ourselves. If you are struggling or stuck now, it may be because you are ready to let go of these old patterns and find new ways of being.

I specialize in working with trauma, anxiety, and disordered eating.
My clients seek me out for many different reasons, including (but not limited to) mood, anxiety, and stress disorders; adjustment difficulties; and relationship and family-of-origin concerns. Sometimes, they just know they're stuck or lost and need help. I use evidence-based approaches (i.e., what we know to be effective with certain concerns) to help clients gain awareness of the interactions between their thoughts, feelings, and behavior; recognize the influences that have shaped these patterns; and develop the knowledge and skills to respond, rather than react, to them.

It's tough out there, isn't it? Perhaps you're struggling with feelings of sadness, isolation, futility, and emptiness. Perhaps you find yourself worrying about the past, present, future, or who you are. You may struggle with trauma or reflexive self-criticism. Maybe you've tried therapy before, and been disappointed by formulaic notions of growth or ideal living. It's certainly easy to feel discouraged. Yet healing is still possible, and I believe that goal-directed and evidence-based therapy is an effective way of facilitating that process.

Hi there! I am Sunny, and I am an EMDR certified therapist. I am accepting new clients for Telehealth sessions via phone or video. I know that anxiousness can be a part of starting therapy, and reaching out for support can be the greatest hurdle to getting connected. I offer a space that is welcoming, inclusive, affirming, and dedicated to seeing you as human, not as flawed. I am best reached via email, as I can respond more quickly to requests for counseling. My wheelhouse incorporates neurodivergence, trauma, depression, and anxiety. I am also an ally of the LGTBQIA+ community, and I value the narratives of all walks of life.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
