I am inspired by the innate human drive to heal. This healing is courageous, intimate, and deserving of honor and care. I bring compassion and respect for all the ways we humans adapt to survive. I can help you holistically address a number of issues, such as: complex and developmental trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, embodiment and dissociation issues, compulsions, addiction, assertiveness, relationship issues, self-esteem issues, gender, and sexuality.

My approach is holistic and experiential, warm and collaborative, direct and gentle, combining talk therapy with somatic practices in mindfulness around breath, movement, touch, and embodied experience.
As human beings, we walk the planet with a complex matrix of shame, hurt, and protection that can be peeled away like layers of an onion. With patient, careful, and non-judgmental guidance we can work to discover the deepest core of our beliefs, desires, and needs, expanding our stories and drawing meaning from our experiences. With this improved awareness, we can build tools and resources for addressing challenges, and perhaps more importantly, create a more peaceful relationship to those challenges. As a result, we become better at our relationships with ourselves and others.

I use an integrative, strengths-based approach primarily informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment theory, Acceptance Commitment Therapy -- a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and a focus on values-driven action, neuroscience and somatic skills, and motivational interviewing.
If you are coping with anxiety, sadness, relationship conflict, stress, or parenting challenges I help you manage difficult feelings and reduce your suffering. If you and your partner can't talk without arguing, have lost trust, or lost the spark and want to connect we'll identify what's keeping you from being close and develop the secure connection you want. If you are having trouble getting pregnant or needing help from outside parties to create your family we'll work through any difficult feelings and explore your options for family building so you can make decisions that build your family and fit your values.

There is no one way to heal and grow, so we can use therapy techniques such as somatic awareness, mindfulness, deep listening, exploring connections between current struggles and past experiences.
I am an integrative therapist, using a holistic model and techniques from somatic, relational, inter-subjective, and transpersonal psychology, as well as techniques from my own long-standing spiritual practices, such as drumming, chanting and Vipassana Buddhist meditation practice. I got my masters in Psychology with a Somatic Concentration from JFK, Orinda, CA in 1997. As LGBTQIA identified and a Pacific Islander, I know that both trauma and healing can come from our individual and cultural histories. I welcome anyone seeking growth or healing and I'm committed to healing within marginalized communities. My areas of specialty include people with histories of trauma and/or addiction, people looking to integrate spiritual experiences, people of color and members of the LGBTQ community.

I'm a warm, affirming, somatic therapist who blends mind-body practices, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems to help you heal so you can build a more aligned life and relationships.
You want to be present, find ease, and fully enjoy your life and relationship but anxiety, trauma, and big transitions keep getting in the way. You've worked hard to create this life and your relationships. You do your best to "have it all together" for friends, family, colleagues, your partner. In the middle of all the roles, changes, and expectations you've lost yourself, disconnected from your needs, and lost track of your values and joy. Whether it is constant anxiety, imposter syndrome disconnection, or pain that keeps holding you back - you're just done living this way and ready to live more fully.

I have a number of tools I use in my work: Ericksonian Hypnotherapy, Somatic Interventions, Post Induction Therapy, & Interplay to develop creativity.
I work with people who face challenges that often arise but are not exclusive to the second half of life such as: the trauma of illness & death, caring for aging parents, loss of satisfaction or sense of meaning in relationships and work, loss of a job, and/or loneliness. I also work with folks suffering from love addiction or love avoidance. These challenges can often be baffling and carry symptoms such as depression, fear and anxiety. The rational mind may understand what is going on but somehow the emotional and physical body can't always take solace in rational solutions.

We all want to feel seen, heard, accepted and affirmed. I support people who are in transition, who are working to define their relationships more clearly, and people who are struggling with issues of identity and sexuality, with a particular focus on polyamory and consensual non-monogamy. I believe we can dismantle behavior and reactions that no longer serve us through self-reflection and challenging entrenched habitual communication. I use narrative techniques, emotionally-focused strategies, and parts work to build acceptance, compassion, and presence in oneself.

My work is guided by the tenet, Life is Relationship. If we can trust our stories to a therapist, that therapeutic relationship can transform us. Self-acceptance, and calm return. I listen compassionately to others to understand what is inhibiting their motivation and self-confidence. I consider lifestyle practices, relationships, use of substances; healthy and unhealthy habits, and one's sense of belonging. My clients and I together identify what helps them change. Some practices and tools I use to guide my work are: talk therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness and stress management practices derived from Yogic philosophy and practices.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
