Final exams and the end of the school are rapidly approaching. Your teenager is stressed, depressed, or a combination of both. They don't seem to be able to maintain focus , lack motivation and are under-performing in school. They might have suicidal thoughts, be self-harming, or have turned to alcohol or drugs to cope. You are worried about their future, but don't know where to turn. I can help. Most of my clients are middle and high school students. I speak TikTok and Instagram. I have tattoos, wear Vans, listen to alternative music, and love a good meme. In short, I connect very well with teens and their parents.

So many people bombard us with cliches like “Life is what you make it” or “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” when the unexpected happens or we lose control of situations and ourselves. Not only does this usually make us feel worse and/or not heard, we usually do not know what those sayings even mean. I’m sure people typically mean well when using these phrases, however, we need practical remedies to the “cards we were dealt” in our personal lives. It’s rare that the average person listens to us, validates us, AND helps us process what’s happening so that we can wholeheartedly move on.

The work of therapy is a journey that the client has invited the therapist to be a part of. The client will serve as the driver while myself, the therapist, will serve as the passenger. I will be a support to you as you continue to navigate through life. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and Certified School Counselor with over 6 years of experience. My focus is working with children, adolescents and adults using the cognitive behavioral therapy approach. I believe that we our behavior stems from our emotions/feelings and our thoughts. There is no 'right' way through this. There is just 'through.' Families are under tremendous pressure, even more so during these times. Children & teens spent too long without their social support and are now trying to achieve a new normal. This fear and anxiety of the unknown is similar to those experienced by adults recently. I can help adults, teens, & children work through the fear, anxiety, stress and trauma and help you build strong, healthy, resilient individuals and families. I enjoy working with all ages and specialize in family conflict, anxiety/depression, trauma, PTSD, Veterans, First Responders, & child specialties.

So you have started looking for a counselor, congratulations on completing what can often be the most difficult step! You probably have some trepidation about talking to a stranger about your life and I know when I first started seeing a counselor, I felt like I was under a microscope and I hated that feeling more than anything. Counseling is supposed to be a place where you can feel safe and I hope we can build trust and an understanding that my office is a place without judgment. Seeking counseling for any reason does not mean that you are broken or something is wrong with you, but rather that guidance is needed in the next steps.

I became a counselor to provide a safe space for people to be themselves. I’m no different from the clients I see. I've been through both wonderful and difficult experiences that have shaped who I am and how I help. I have seen the effect a compassionate listener can have on a person. As a counselor I want to help you let go of the things that have been holding you back. Being a therapist is inspiring. I love helping people become healthier and more empowered and watching them transform their lives. I am committed to encouraging you to see healing and transformation are possible, and to be excited about your life again.

Are you worried about your child? Struggling with meltdowns, crying, yelling, or even aggressive outbursts? As a parent it breaks your heart to see your child so overwhelmed by their feelings. You know they feel things very deeply, but the dramatic highs and lows are exhausting. You wish they could calm themselves down and cope with big feelings well. Seeing your child so upset makes you feel like a failure as a parent. You worry their behavior keeps them from making friends. You long for peace and harmony in your home. Every book or person has a different idea of how to help. You feel lost and confused on what to do next.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
