Your teenager is struggling. They are anxious, depressed, or both. They don't seem to be able to maintain focus and are under-performing in school. They might have suicidal thoughts, be
self-harming
, or have turned to alcohol or drugs to cope. You are worried about their future, but don't know where to turn. I can help. Most of my clients are middle and high school students who fall in one or more of these categories. I speak Tik Tok, Snapchat and Instagram. I have tattoos, wear Vans, listen to alternative music, and love a good meme. In short, I connect very well with teens and their parents.

Constantly making bad decisions in or around your relationships can take a toll on you. Compound that with the guilt of an affair or infidelity and things can get very dicey. Black men haven’t always had appropriate relationship behaviors modeled for them. We have to learn on the fly and will undoubtedly make mistakes in the process. Struggling with self defeating behaviors is extremely stressful and dangerous. When you make this kind of mistake where can you turn for guidance and support?

There are basic truths of human psychology that most people understand intuitively. We do not fully know ourselves; the things we do not know can cause suffering. There is a benefit to self-awareness. I will support you as you develop your innate capacity to be with your own life, just as it is, and assist as you develop more effective strategies for living joyfully and with compassion for yourself as well as others. As we bring together your sense of yourself in past, present and future states, feelings of organization and coherence develop. Choice is restored.

Having a good understanding of self is crucial in developing a healthy self concept. We’ll have a safe and caring one-on-one session where you can talk to me like you’re talking to yourself. This can be about you, your challenges, your career, and anything that bothers you that you know you need help with. I will then help you to the bottom of it and find a solution. I will help you to get out of your way!

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
