Like a deflating balloon, there are times when we all feel as if the zest for life is slowly drifting away from us. Broken relationships, loneliness, work-related stress, financial issues, physical illness, and traumatic events are but a few of the stressors that can leave us feeling depleted and without the resiliency to bounce back. When these stressors surface, we tend to get stuck in our same old patterns of thinking and behaving. While these patterns are safe and familiar, they do little to facilitate the change that is needed. By utilizing your inner strengths and developing effective coping skills, you can overcome obstacles.

If your thinking about having a real, authentic conversation with an experienced therapist to help you get through some problems, I'm your guy. From 9 to 90, we go through transitions that we really need to talk to someone about because we are just flat stuck. Life gets complicated. A relationship with a trustworthy counselor can help you restore some mental health with self-respect. After a talk or two, you'll be able to see the forest better, and thus you'll be less daunted by the trees. If you're out on a limb, angry and afraid, remember to try to not bounce. Breath, and be brave.

When we get the message growing up that we're "not good enough" - that we're "not worthy enough" - we spend the rest of our lives trying to prove our worth to others. Some of us self-soothe through developing addictions, and some of us cope by feeling the need to have to clean up other people's messes - even when it puts our own mental health at risk. We do this by feeling responsible for other people's problems, by avoiding conflict, and by overcompensating and taking on way more than we should.

I became a counselor to provide a safe space for people to be themselves. I’m no different from the clients I see. I've been through both wonderful and difficult experiences that have shaped who I am and how I help. I have seen the effect a compassionate listener can have on a person. As a counselor I want to help you let go of the things that have been holding you back. Being a therapist is inspiring. I love helping people become healthier and more empowered and watching them transform their lives. I am committed to encouraging you to see healing and transformation are possible, and to be excited about your life again.

How many times have you thought about going to counseling only to say to yourself"I'll be fine, there's nothing wrong with me, this will pass"? Me too, until it was obvious I wasn't fine, there was something wrong and it wasn't going to pass. It is a scary proposition to sit down with a complete stranger and tell them your innermost thoughts and emotions. I believe that most of us know where we are and where we want to be, but sometimes understanding what got us where we are and how we are going to get where we want to be are not so clear. I can help you get where you want to be. It isn't always easy, but it is worth it.

Life has its ups and downs. No matter how much we think we have control over it, we’re constantly reminded that we don’t. What we do have control over is how we shape our perspectives towards our experiences. Be assured that you are not alone, nor do you have to do this by yourself. Venture with me on this therapeutic journey of exploring and processing the thorns of life (disappointment, rejection, shame, guilt, abuse, etc.) and identifying ways to constructively navigate through them. New thorns will form but be encouraged, for the testing of your faith produces perseverance; through perseverance, you may be mature and complete.

Anxiety, depressive feelings, being afraid of where the future may lead, or trying to figure out how to get over initial humps are common, but may also feel emotionally and physically draining. Therapy should be thoughtful, supportive, and provide a sense of safety for you to be yourself. This is the environment I look to create so that you can gain a deeper sense of self, and explore old thinking patterns and behaviors that may be preventing you from moving forward. I can offer a fresh perspective to help you re-frame those negative thoughts in a more productive direction.

Trauma leaves us feeling anxious, unprotected and not knowing who to trust. You just want to go one day without being triggered. You probably don't even remember a time when you felt safe. You just want to know how to trust yourself, nevermind trusting anyone else. All you know is that you want to feel relief. You want to feel safe and to know that you can trust yourself and others. Most of all you're ready to feel confident, hopeful, and knowing you can accomplish your goals. I want to help get you there!

Does it seem like emotions are taking over your life – anxiety, hurt, anger, sadness? Are you struggling with grief, trauma, or life transitions? Are you noticing relationships are becoming more difficult and problems are surfacing at home, work, or school? Are you turning to coping tools that may help in the moment, but are starting to make things worse overall - drug use, unhealthy relationships, isolation, or other behaviors? Are you losing sight of yourself, the person you want to be, and the strengths you have? If you identify with any of these questions, know you are not alone.

Life can be much different than what we expected it would be like, right? Sure, on the outside, it might look to others like you have it all together... but no matter how hard you try, the reality you're experiencing is actually far from that. Your emotional energy is totally depleted. Your relationships are strained. You fight feelings of emptiness or that you're not enough. You're plagued with indecision and feel stuck. Maybe you even feel guilty that someone like you should be able to just "get over it" or "deal with it" on your own— and this guilt only perpetuates the negative cycle you’re stuck in.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
