I specialize in working with women during preconception, challenges getting pregnant, pregnancy, postpartum and into motherhood. Becoming a mother is often exciting and joyous but also can be overwhelming, exhausting and bring up mood changes, worries, fears and more. The support of a counselor during this time can be very helpful and can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. I also specialize in working with adult women of all ages challenged with depression, anxiety, eating disorders or difficulty losing weight, chronic stress and fatigue. For more information visit www.dr-genevieve-nd.com/

Most conflict involves relationship: a relationship with ourselves, our parents, our children, our lovers, our bosses, our co-workers. This is the one area where education fails us. We inhabit an adult body with a child's knowledge of how to interact with the world and ourselves and that is where a therapist's knowledge can be beneficial. "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it" (Rumi). I can help a client find and diminish those barriers.

As a therapist, I believe first and foremost in the healing and growth that can happen in relationship. My therapeutic approach is about meeting people where they are, and engaging each individual in a healing dialogue that is appropriate and specific to his or her life. I am a process oriented therapist. This means that I am primarily interested in understanding the process through which my clients respond to the world and how they make meaning out of their experiences. My goal is to facilitate increased awareness in my clients and improve agency, choice, and connection in their lives.

Therapy can be a vulnerable thing to ask for and difficult to find someone who is a good fit for you. I think having a counseling relationship where you feel safe to express yourself and feel understood by your therapist is so important. I have the utmost respect for those who find courage to share their pain and struggles with another.

Resilience: “The capacity of a person to maintain their core purpose and integrity in the face of dramatically changed circumstances.” Resilience, at its core, relates to the process of adapting to challenging circumstances. Adaptation does not necessarily mean letting go of past experiences, challenges, or losses, but rather the act of learning to live with pain in a manner that allows you to survive. In seeking support, you are doing just that. Welcome to Resilience Counseling, PLLC.

Working with children, adolescents and families in a wholistic manner is key in support and therapy. I am passionate about working with children, teens, and families who are navigating a neurotypical world through a neurodivergent lens. Finding support, information, and psychotherapy can be a challenge, but I am dedicated to bringing a client-led approach and a place where clients can feel seen and heard. I have had the pleasure of working with community agencies, courts, schools, wrap around services, and other mental health programs. In the therapy space I value client voice, safety and self advocacy.

Whether you are dealing with emotional duress, physical challenges or survival worries, music therapy can lower stress, increase mobility, stimulate cognition and promote relaxation. Individuals can transcend the barriers that keep them from an abundant life through the intentional use of music. Careful listening, melody, rhythm and gentle movement all support wellness and quality of life. I also work with individuals living with neurologic disorders, those at end-of-life, as well as professional musicians to overcome psychological or physical obstacles. However, one doesn't need to be a musician to engage in music therapy!

My passion is in working with teens and young adults who have had to navigate parental divorce, loss, family conflicts, struggles with anxiety and depression, and healing from abusive relationships. The relationships we have throughout life can cause pain, but relationships also have the power to bring healing to those areas of our hearts and minds that have been damaged. This is why a therapeutic relationship is so impactful and why my approach to therapy is relational and collaborative.

I have been in private practice since 2004 and work with individuals, couples and groups dealing with a wide variety of issues. I recognize that each client is unique and strive to create an individual plan of therapy tailored to each person's specific needs. This often includes dealing with what isn't working in their life, whether it's depression, traumatic past experiences or relational difficulties, also recognizing the aspects of their life that may be working well and finding ways to build on those strengths.

Your story is important and unique to you. What you bring into the counseling session is more than a diagnosis or problems you are struggling with. Reaching out for support today is a significant step in getting to where you want to go - congrats! Good For You! You have taken the first step: You are asking for help at a time when life challenges have caused you to pause and reflect. Life can feel out of balance, leaving us with feelings of despair, anxiousness and loss. Our basic human needs are those of connecting to others. We feel pain and discomfort when we feel separated. It takes courage to look at ourselves, to find the meaning of the discomfort. This struggle can have profound lasting results for personal growth, better health, and closer relationships with our family, friends and the community at large.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Bellingham?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
