My approach to therapy is client-centered, collaborative, and relational.
Sometimes our relationships with others, or ourselves, get stuck. We may have lost direction, purpose, or meaning, and we become unsure of who we are or who we are in our relationships with other people. We may feel alone, sad, or scared. Some of us become overwhelmed by naming these emotions. Some of us may choose to isolate ourselves and think we must navigate this life alone. In these moments, we are invited to pay attention; when we do, we begin healing. Therapy can be a gift, inviting you to look inward and grow.

Are you feeling lost in life or in your relationship? My work with couples and individuals is about helping to make sense of what is happening on a deeper level. It may be that you feel anxious, angry or depressed too often. Or you might find yourself acting in ways that hurt instead of help. Are you finding yourself caught in self defeating patterns? Are you anxious or depressed and don't know why? Maybe you are hard on yourself in ways you aren't to others. Or, do you find yourself overly critical of others? Do you wish you were happier, more at peace? We all try and want to live at our best, but many of us find ourselves pulled back into old patterns before we recognize our actions. We cope in many different ways or develop symptoms that are often self destructive. Why do we do this?

What parts of yourself do you wish to develop? Healing and growing is a process, and therapy is a place to look inside ourselves, find new and meaningful pieces, and bring them back to integrate into our daily lives. Whether we are celebrating your successes or processing through the challenges, meaning can be made either way. I’ll be there in each session to be someone on your side, on your team. Together we will collaborate on your goals, and the strategies around how to achieve them.

It is my belief that everyone navigates his or her way through their family of origin and early environment by developing strategies and coping techniques, essentially doing the best one can in the circumstances. Later, these ways of handling relationships and stressors can become limiting. Members of couples and families can also develop entrenched ways of relating that become partially based on assumptions. Frustration, anxiety, disappointment and resentment can result. Psychotherapy enables you to understand the evolution of these patterns and develop more choices in how you respond and relate to others.

Welcome! Therapy can be a safe place to explore your fears and worries, and also a place where you can learn new coping strategies, while finding hope and healing. Many of us have wounds from the past and often, new traumas can trigger those wounds to re-emerge. However, living the life you deserve is possible. I believe in the power of the human spirit and that it moves us towards healing. In therapy, you can find your way back to our path or create a new one. I see clients only via teletherapy.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
