I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, and while I’m trained in psychodynamic therapy, I integrate techniques like EMDR, CBT, DBT, and somatic therapy to create a treatment plan that (actually) works for YOU.
Hi, I'm Erika! I’m passionate about supporting individuals (ages 14+), couples, and families navigate many of life's challenges. My areas of focus are anxiety/depression, eating disorders, relationship issues, addiction, or past trauma. Maybe you've experienced sexual assault, or struggle with an eating disorder like anorexia, binge eating, or body image concerns. Perhaps you're navigating relationship struggles (and want to disrupt core patterns that aren’t working), or addiction (including substance use, sex addiction, or porn addiction). Whatever your battle, I offer a safe and supportive space to heal and rediscover yourself.

If you are looking to heal from past pain, end destructive patterns, reconnect with your body, or choose and cultivate meaningful, intimate relationships: Welcome! I work with clients suffering from relational trauma and abuse, grief and loss, PTSD, anxiety, depression, past sexual abuse, and addictions. My ability to guide others is informed by my training but rooted in my own experiences of suffering, and of the utter relief of finding my own healing path.

As a psychologist with over 20 years of experience, I seek to provide a nonjudgmental and nurturing environment in which you can explore your current struggles. I believe that the therapist client relationship is critical to help you effect the positive change you are looking for. Together we can explore the patterns in your life that are preventing you from living the life you want and we can work to set realistic goals. Although I am trained using a psychodynamic approach, I also utilize DBT and mindfulness to help clients cope with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other mental health concerns.

A combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and at times testing assessment, allows me the opportunity to work with people more comprehensively, focusing on each person and family's unique and varying needs.
With over 20 years of clinical experience, I work with individuals, couples and families struggling with a variety of issues at all stages of development. Stress, anxiety, depression, and grief can be difficult to manage for anyone, and can be exacerbated by life circumstances. Relationship issues and family stressors can also be precipitants for increased difficulties for individuals. Personalities and abilities differ-from athletes to artists- having unique needs. Parents dealing with children with ADHD, twice gifted, learning disorders, or autism face very specific interactional challenges, impacting all areas of their life.

As an integrative therapist, I incorporate psychodynamic and attachment principals, EMDR, mindfulness, dreamwork, and evidence based tools to help you reach your goals.
My goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can feel seen, heard and accepted. I believe it is the relationship between client and therapist where so much of the work happens. We can work collaboratively to explore relational patterns, understand the connection between thoughts, emotions and behavior, and get curious about what may be holding you back from a deeper connection to self and others.

Martha Koo, who provided my clinical training from a psychodynamic perspective.
As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT), I focus my practice on clients who struggle with trauma, substance abuse, and personality disorders. I want to assist you with transforming your negative coping (substance abuse, self-harm, disordered eating, risky behaviors) into positive coping that will decrease your feelings of anxiety and detachment and increase your ability to sustain long-term relationships and employ self-love. I believe that many of our negative coping skills are rooted in a history of trauma, which requires careful consideration and a gentle, loving, experienced approach to process fully.

I believe that high-quality, individualized treatment is essential for effective outcomes, and therefore have extensive training in several theoretical orientations including acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment-based therapy, and psychodynamic therapies.
I understand that seeking therapy can be a difficult decision. It takes courage and strength to take the first steps to reach out to a clinician. I also know first-hand that therapy can be one of the most rewarding and transformative journeys you can embark upon. With over 18 years of clinical experience, I have treated hundreds of individual clients with conditions like anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, grief and loss, and insomnia. I also specialize in working with individuals in high stress fields (executives, attorneys, healthcare providers, Navy SEALs, and aviators) to manage occupational stress for peak performance.

I draw on aspects of cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness, EMDR, psychodynamic, and biofeedback to assist patients in improving their symptoms, relationships, self-image, and coping strategies.
One of the most important aspects in therapy is for patients to feel heard, respected, and understood. Given that each individual is unique, and no one issue is ever the same among different people, my approach is integrative and tailored to meet the needs of the person, not the "problem". I strive to create a compassionate, non-judgemental environment for patients to learn, grow, explore, challenge, and to live the life they want to be living. I specialize in working with adults - individual, couples, and family - with anxiety, depression, PTSD/trauma, relationship problems, substance abuse, ADD/ADHD, and LGBTQ issues.

I draw from CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic theory to help clients develop coping skills to manage their day-to-day lives while finding their passion and purpose.
As a therapist specializing in mental health, addiction recovery, trauma, relationships, and family dynamics, I have been helping adults, adolescents, couples and families navigate the challenges of life for the past twelve years of clinical experience. Drawing from my experience as an addiction counselor since 2015, 5 years as a therapist, my personal journey of recovery for 13 years, I have developed a unique and integrated therapeutic framework that empowers my clients to discover the root cause of their problems. As my client, I will guide you to your truth rather than trying to impose my ideas of what I think is best for you.

If you suffer from developmental (trauma from childhood abuse) or acute trauma (for example, rape, assault, divorce, accident), I am trained in EMDR, neurofeedback and somatic therapy that can help you heal. Neurofeedback, which is exercise for the brain, improves self-regulation and calms the nervous system, building resiliency. EMDR is a process that desensitizes and reprocesses trauma. Somatic Experiencing releases pent up energy in the body that keeps us from completing and letting go of traumatic experiences. I use these methods, along with traditional psychodynamic talk therapy, in a kind and healing environment.

I use a relational, psychodynamic, mind-body-spirit integrated approach to expedite your healing, growth and change.
First, you probably need to know this right now... that you were created to be loved! Next, in therapy, real growth and change is influenced significantly by what you feel and think about your therapist. You need to feel safe, understood, validated, cared for, and able to trust the competency and selflessness of your therapist. Please feel free to come for a free introductory meeting with me. With deep care, compassion, understanding, and respect, I help you transition from surviving to thriving in relationships and life. I specialize in broken relationships or those struggling with past trauma or abuse.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
