I specialize in working with individuals, relationships, and families who present to therapy with a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, perinatal anxiety and mood disorders, couple/family conflicts, and experiences of grief and loss. I have a special interest in working with mothers/birthing individuals who are struggling with issues related to perinatal mental health such as infertility, pregnancy loss, and prenatal/ postpartum anxiety and depression. In addition to being a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, I also am a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Provider (PMH-C).

I am Dr. Sylvia Kobe, and I am a Licensed Clinical psychologist. My associate Dr. Mary-Zitta Muabe and I collaborate to cover a broad counseling spectrum. Together Dr. Muabe and I specialize in marriage, family therapy, and spiritual maturity. We also work with teens, young adults, and individuals battling anxiety, depression, or struggles to cope with every-life issues. We believe in empowering our clients, encouraging them to see that life is all about second chances, and with the right kind of intervention, the best is yet to come.

I work with individuals, couples, and families struggling with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, addiction issues (substance abuse), troubled teens, school failure, LGBTQ+, and trauma and identity issues. As a lifelong allied and friend to the LGBTQ+ community, I work very hard to remain current to concerns that are specific to marginalized communities. I tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique needs. I will work with you to think outside of the box and build strength through our therapeutic relationship.

Difficult times in life are opportunities for growth and change. I specialize in exploring identity, relationships, and transitions, mindful of the interplay between our formative experiences and current ways of being in the world. Through the therapeutic process, we understand and address anxious and depressed feelings; recover from losses and addictions, and manage work and family related stresses. I facilitate my clients' innate movement toward healing and authenticity.

For over 15 years I have worked with children, teens and adults managing difficulties with social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. The diverse experience with each age has given me insight to share in the therapy room with you. I address each challenge with great care and energy to help move toward growth with you or your child to find understanding and greater ways of coping, being in relationships and thriving.

Much like the character Hamlet says to his friend in the play by William Shakespeare “there is more in heaven and earth than is dreamt of in our philosophy”. There is so much about life and living, loving and losing than we can possibly understand. Whatever philosophical ideas we hold, there is so much that remains unknowable. Because it resonates with my own respect for and curiosity about the mystery of being alive, my clinical practice is informed by existential thinking. Why is this happening? How can I survive? What does it mean? These are the questions underlying our reactions to and feelings about our lives.

My professional training in various theories and models led me to reflect on my beliefs about human nature, how problems develop within people, and their capacity to change. Taking an Adlerian approach allows me to counsel through my core beliefs: society/the dominant culture’s oppressive ways impact people and therefore a shift to a more egalitarian society needs to occur; with empathic, compassionate, and culturally responsive support, people can change, grow, and improve their lives for both self and social interest; and with culturally responsive education and support, society can do better with each other and for each other.

I specialize in perinatal issues: high risk pregnancy, loss, infertility, traumatic delivery, postpartum mood changes.

Though each person’s experience is unique, a common thread is that not knowing where emotions come from adds to suffering. My hope is to provide a nonjudgmental place to better understand your emotions so that you can gain a sense of agency in creating a meaningful life. A meaningful life may involve feeling comfortable sitting alone with your thoughts, the past becoming less haunting, more effective communication in relationships, believing you are good enough as you are, or something else.
