I help people who seek to increase awareness, strengths, intelligence (IQ and EQ), resiliency, create empowering processes and solutions leading to meaningful life engagement, and improving quality of life. I have worked with all ages, backgrounds and issues, individuals, couples and families. I have found the best predictor of effective therapy is how well the client connects with the therapist. I am open to working with all people, cultures and concerns.

My aim is to create an environment where you feel safe to explore your problems without being judged. Once we have established a working relationship built on mutual trust, honesty, and respect, my goals are to help you better understand your problems, identify obstacles that have inhibited your capacity for growth, and support you in the process of making positive and often times difficult life changes. With the right therapist you should expect to feel more alive and authentic, be able to seek out and sustain more fulfilling relationships, and gain increased levels of self-acceptance and confidence.

I believe therapy is about a therapist and a client collaborating together to address mental health issues and or deal with life problems. I believe the client (You) is the expert about themselves concerning strengths, weaknesses, and issues of concern. I believe it is my purpose as a therapist to build a therapeutic relationship which supports the development of your insights, and life skills; including the identification of strengths, and support systems that may aid in the reduction of negative symptoms and improve quality. I do tele-health and I am hoping to be in person by summer 2023 and joined by Mason my therapy dog.

I provide useful and in-depth psychotherapy in Connecticut, New York, Oregon, & California. People are in a constant developmental process, whereby symptoms are signs of ongoing struggles to sort through past experiences while organizing oneself in present living. Depression, anxiety, & personality traits are markers of this process. Therapy with me would seek to aid in your understanding of how & why you live the way you do, and hopefully lead to change. My hope is that we can find a way for you to live more fully and for problems to be comprehensively understood, formulated and articulated, and resolved in a sustained way.

Real transformation often begins when you're suffering intensely. The intense suffering breaks through your hesitation to change at a core level. You don't have a choice anymore. Dark material surfaces: emotional and physical trauma, religious trauma, loss, anxiety, spiritual crisis, meaninglessness, depression, and illness. Imagine that the symptoms you're suffering from are calling you home to a new way of living and being. I bring a high level of clinical experience, training, and compassion to my work. I am truly interested in you, how you got to this difficult point, and how to connect you to your authentic self.

"When you come into therapy it is a time to expand the sense of yourself. Our job is to get familiar with the values that have helped you get through difficult situations and use them now. You may be a combat veteran, mental health or law enforcement worker having family or relationship problems. You need clear and practical strategies for replacing automatic reactions with mindful responses. Feeling understood by another human being is useful for flexible problem solving and clarifying your values. The majority of my experience is working with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD will definitely get better with knowledgeable treatment."

I can identify chapters in my practice of seeing distinct groups of clients, including adoptees, survivors of child/sexual abuse, persons living with HIV/AIDS, LGBT clients, ACOA's, disabled veterans, and grief & loss struggles.
Over the years I see that I am very well-suited to work with clients who are experiencing a major life transition. These include changes in relationship status, employment, health, sexual/ gender identity, as well as retirement/aging concerns. While transitions can bring new opportunities, such changes also come with an array of losses, endings and goodbyes. Transitions can generate challenging symptoms, including a sense of grieving, starting over and/or confronting the unknown. Life can lead one to a place where it pushes you to explore your personality and life choices, and make new sense of your life experiences.

I count it a privilege to work with clients and meet people in their hour of need and sometimes in their hour of desperation. One of my greatest strengths is helping you discover solutions amidst complicated and emotional challenges that are plaguing your life. I try to meet clients right where they are, and encourage them to see a better future for their lives and families.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
