I have experience working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, interpersonal dissatisfaction, and mood instability, who feel uncertain about the course their life may be taking. I work with
trauma
and believe it comes in many different guises, whether it's an acute incident of assault or a long and painful feeling of being misunderstood by one's primary caretaker (i.e. parent or partner). Talk therapy serves to help people alleviate all kinds of suffering as well as developing the capacities for new experience.

Young adults (ages 18-40) have special needs, including: transitioning to new life events; feeling insecure about friendships; recognizing unresolved
trauma
/loss; creating a sustainable work/life balance (often while struggling with pressures to succeed and/or procrastination); and comparing themselves to others while efforting to figure out what they want professionally/socially/romantically. Because of the limited services in New York that address the specific needs of this population, Ms. Francis' private practice focuses on them.

My practice is open for individuals interested in exploring various issues, including
trauma
, immigration, sexual identity, gender identity, anxiety, depression, anger, interpersonal and intimate relationships, life changes, stress and the intersectionality of these identities and experiences.
We are not cardboard cutouts of a single experience but a amalgamation of realities and identities. Using the Gestalt approach, together we create an open and creative space to explore the inner world of emotions, thoughts, and body felt senses that accompany the daily lived experience of unique identities and intersectionalities with compassion and awareness. My hope is to work collaboratively with you and start with a conversation saying the words "I am..." and create the space that embraces and cherishes who you are. I welcome all gender and sexuality identities, and relationship dynamics.

She helps to manage distress tolerance, effective communication and how to create and maintain healthy boundaries. Fear can be so haunting and debilitating. And sometimes we can be ruled by the deep and ugly fear that someone, somewhere, will figure us out and share with the world how flawed or awful parts of us truly can be. The truth of the matter is, we are all scared. And we are all complex people who are all made up of millions of parts. Some beautiful, some weird, some deeply anxious and some tumultuous and some defensive. My hope in our work together is to meet those parts, create some space to really get to know them, and give them some permission to get messy so that ultimately, they can heal.

Experienced in treating depression, anxiety, complex
trauma
, and relationship distress, I draw on attachment and psychodynamic theories while integrating evidence-based practice, including CBT and EFT for couples.
The demands of daily living often deny us the opportunity to reflect upon and respond to that which needs healing. Beyond helping you find relief from distressing symptoms, I aim to create an affirming space where you can explore and repair patterns that have left you feeling stuck, lost and disconnected. Our work will focus on empowering you to claim the life you deem meaningful and the relationships you find fulfilling. Having been fortunate to work with clients of diverse backgrounds and ages, I am attuned to the ways that culture informs experience and draw upon these considerations throughout my work with teens to older adults.

trauma
is held in the body, the way the body keeps the score. My goal is to help you find both symptom relief and deeper change. I also work with my associate Asha Kadir who works with all kinds of mental health issues, and particularly loves working with young adults, international students, immigrants and refugees. Intersectionality is important in our practice.

I've worked with
trauma
and injustice for many years, and I recognize the courage it takes to trust another person with the most vulnerable parts of yourself. My primary modalities are EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS). In my office, I strive to provide a therapeutic space where all parts feel welcome, where you can experience something radically different and practice new and courageous ways of relating to yourself and to others. I've successfully helped teenagers, adults and couples experience healing from
trauma
and unresolved events, peace from anxiety and acceptance in times of grief.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
