Hello, I'm Mark. I specialize in LGBTQ+, adoption, trauma, and anxiety related issues. Do you feel overwhelmed, unheard, sad, or frustrated? Does internalized homophobia hinder your ability to create the life and relationships you desire? Do you compartmentalize your feelings and responses in different places or have hard time expressing your needs? Traumas has a way of preventing you from moving forward in your life. Finding solutions is easier when we break them down into smaller pieces or view them from different perspectives. These are some of the areas I can help you express your needs, feel heard and live the life you want.

I've maintained a psychotherapy private practice in Lower Manhattan for more than eighteen years, and about ten years ago moved to an office in a loft in TriBeCa. As a former corporate lawyer, I've developed a sub-specialty in working with attorneys and finance professionals around career issues, but I'm also gay and have worked with LGBT people and all sorts of other people around just about anything. I welcome one and all.

I utilize affirming frameworks that: embrace LGBTQ+ identity and sex and kink positivity in monogamous or alternative relationship structures, manage negative consequences associated with drug use through a Harm Reduction paradigm, and help heal past trauma through grounding and mindfulness practices.
Guided introspection leading to actionable connections is a tonic in an increasingly isolating, and volatile world. Whether this is your first time in therapy or another chapter on your quest for fulfillment in relationship with yourself and others, I am dedicated to meeting you where you are. Together we will bear witness to joys and challenges of being a human in our modern society, and celebrate the richness of humanity. As a trained couples and family therapist, I utilize a variety of theories integrating my past experience in both the performing arts and as a yoga instructor to provide a creative, holistic experience.

Relationship therapy isn't just for married people; it is helpful for cohabiting couples, people in ENMRs, LGBTQ people, siblings dealing with family issues, or even business partners.
Are you experiencing frustration and disagreement in your relationship? Feeling defensive, shut down, or overwhelmed? Feeling like you are beating your head against the wall hoping for a different outcome? Do you feel stuck and crave more in your relationship? Do you feel lonely, taken for granted, and unappreciated? Do you carry the burden of the responsibilities in your home? Do you struggle to change your partner’s mind about divorce, rebuild trust, forgive and be forgiven, or save a marriage after an affair? Do you want to rekindle your love and passion, and most importantly understand how much you love your lives together?

Do you want to find a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to explore new aspects of yourself? I am a gay, cisgender white man living in Astoria, Queens. After my own positive experience in therapy at the age of 14, I had wanted to pursue a career in the field of counseling for much of my life. I know firsthand that experiences in therapy can add so much value to a person’s life, through positive change and growth, as well as developing a better understanding of oneself.

I tend to connect with creative people, members of the LGBTQ community and those who value self-expression.
Psychotherapy is ultimately about achieving a deeper understanding of the self, articulating the issues one struggles with and creating a pathway towards change. It can be a challenge to shape our futures and to find the right therapist with whom you can establish a meaningful connection. Whether you are seeking therapy as an individual or as a couple, navigating the kinds of questions keeping you up at night means finding someone you can trust. Someone with whom you can co-create a judgement-free, compassionate, empathetic landscape. I’m interested in finding out if we can build that kind of dynamic together.

I specialize in mens’ issues, substance use and recovery, LGBTQ+ issues, adolescents and young adults, depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship struggles.
I take an eclectic approach to therapeutic modalities, incorporating psychodynamic and relational approaches with specific CBT, DBT, and mindfulness skills. I believe that exploring our past experiences and the ways we carry patterns of relating to people throughout our lives is the bedrock of therapeutic change, but that at times, it is important to focus on here and now skills in order to deal with acute crises.

Do you want to explore the untapped parts of yourself that make you unique? I am a black, queer, cis-gender male from Long Island and I believe therapy is the best place to discover what makes you unique. In my personal journey to mental wellness, I it was challenging to find a therapist that felt safe, relatable and authentic. I know what it is like to be judged and misunderstood because of your identity and who you love. With my journey, I am empowered to help you navigate your relationships, your past experiences, and the stresses of your daily life.

I’ve helped countless gay/bi/queer men regain control of their lives, and I can do the same for you.
You are living the dream. You have a great career, a lovely home, and a solid support network. People all agree that you’re doing great. But you don’t see it. Everyone is proud of you and values what you do; everyone except you, that is. And you’re unsure why there’s such a discrepancy between your self-image and the image of you that everyone else has. You begin to wonder if it stems from an earlier time in your life when you were forced to hide who you really were. You've gotten so used to pretending to be someone else that you feel like a fraud. You’ve lost touch with your authentic self and don’t know how to get it back.

As a gay man and therapist, I am passionate about helping other LGBTQ individuals bring their stories into therapy in a holistic way.
Gay men and lesbian women face many challenges that are specific to them. It is important to find a therapist that understands your unique experience as a queer person in a culture that promotes heterosexuality as the norm. Whether it's past traumas or internalizing the stigma that we have been exposed to, we all have life events that impact the way we see the world today. For queer people, our worldview may be impacted by our time in the closet, messages we receive from media, and the different communities we belong to.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
