Today you are one step closer to a new you where you feel empowered and on a positive path to growth and well-being. Our experiences in life although similar are still very individual and unique to each of us. It is normal to experience anxiety, fear, anger and sorrow however; when these emotions are extreme they can prevent us from being fully alive, spontaneous and joyful. It is during these times we may need assistance to better understand ourselves and make necessary changes. I commonly treat individuals and couples with anxiety, depression, addictions and relationship difficulties that successfully resolve the issues causing these symptoms.

Often times people come to therapy due to feeling excessive stress at work, at home, or in their relationships. They find the pressures of every day life have exceeded their abilities, overwhelmed their senses, and left them with an inability to cope. They are often having problems going to school, completing tasks, getting along with others at work, and finding activities enjoyable resulting in low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, or other symptoms. Families often report not being able to get along or feeling overwhelmed with parenting a child that is having behavioral problems. They know they need to make a change.

Hi, I'm Julia! I am passionate about working with individuals navigating substance use issues, disordered eating and body image concerns, and people who are currently dating or looking to re-enter the dating scene. I am particularly passionate about working with those who struggle with alcohol use. It is hard to focus on the current moment. It is a challenge to stay attached and connected to your body. There are so many things going on, and all you can experience are images, smells, and feelings of times when you were forced to survive. You may think, "How do I let go" "How do I find connection" There may be times that you lose hours or days, and come to ask yourself, "How did I get here" and "How do I talk about what's going on without feeling like a burden?" There may be times when you feel you cannot connect to others as your life experiences feel too big. You may feel shame in your experiences, and others may not relate to

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
