I use mindfulness, emotion focused, eco/nature, and Christian or spiritual therapy in indoor, outdoor, and online settings.
Welcome, my name is Cynthia. I am glad you are here because seeking help is the first step to wellness. As a Christian mental health and substance treatment counselor, I am honored to counsel women age 18 and above in-person or online in North Wilkesboro, NC and surrounding areas. Helping women recognize their inner strength and thrive beyond such issues as trauma, abuse, and tragedy is a calling in my life. My experience and research supports that spiritual wellness betters our mental and emotional health. I look forward to partnering with God and women in their journey of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness.

Though I work with everyone, and all are welcome, always, I specialize in working with adolescent teens and adult men. Emphasizing mindfulness, my work is particularly effective in dealing with patterns of substance use or other addictive tendencies, social anxiety, ADHD, and important life transitions. Rather than having my own agenda, I appreciate helping clients clarify and compassionately move toward their vision, find meaning through challenge, and gain deeper understanding of their own dilemmas. I also enjoy helping people learn to communicate authentically with their loved ones in ways that help change detrimental patterns.

My therapeutic approach reflects integrative training in Client-Centered, LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy, Grief and Loss, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and utilize a Humanistic approach.
I am often asked why I chose to be a therapist. My answer is always the same. I understand what it feels like to go through something difficult, new, or challenging alone. Therapy is my passion, and serving as a guide/supportive presence to help clients reach their goals is my sole purpose in treatment. I believe that every client is an expert regarding their life experiences. Therefore, therapy is a collaborative effort, so I am always open to feedback from clients in order to provide the best service for each individual.

I do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I adopt a collaborative approach to treatment working closely with my clients to determine goals for counseling. Together, we will explore both the current circumstances and the past experiences that are contributing to your concerns. Then, we team up to find solutions to current problems and work to heal old wounds. I use an eclectic approach tailored to the specific needs of each client, but primarily draw from psychodynamic, existential, CBT, and mindfulness interventions.

I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and Anger Management.
Are you feeling overwhelmed or do you know you have been in survival mode for a long time? Past life experiences such as childhood trauma, relationships (romantic/platonic) loss or abuse can create barriers. This leaves most people to deal with their feelings of guilt, shame, and disappointment alone. You deserve a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings and a great therapist to help you process your experiences and move towards your goals.

I use mindfulness-based interventions to help people reconnect with their body and heal from the bottom up.
I treat clients who have a history of trauma and/or eating concerns. Maybe this resonates with you. Perhaps your trauma manifested in maladaptive behaviors, like cutting, an eating disorder, or risk behaviors. You have lost the ability to tune into your body and need help reconnecting with your body's wisdom. Using mindfulness, EMDR, and other body-based interventions, I can help you process trauma and develop healthy coping skills to replace the ones that cause you pain.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
