I am a Clinical Psychologist, who loves to help people create a lasting sense of happiness, meaning, and well-being in their lives. I believe that health constitutes a state of relative balance between all the "strains" put on our system (e.g. daily life stressors, losses, obligations, negative life events, etc.) and the physical, mental, spiritual and relational resources we have available to us to draw upon. In therapy, I work with people to identify where there is "too much energy" in their lives, and where the energy is missing, in order to help them create more harmonious, full, and vibrant life.

I respect the courage that it takes to seek help when life's challenges become overwhelming. It is often a very painful place that can be difficult to share with another person. I am very sensitive to the fact that the first step can be the most difficult. I use a collaborative, compassionate approach with my clients. I rely on my knowledge and experience coupled with theoretical approaches to customize a plan for the individual situation. The goal is to work toward holistic balance.

Helping people navigate life's challenges is my passion. I believe in relationships, and enjoy working with clients to help them develop healthier connections within themselves, with friends and family, and with society. I also take a particular interest in teaching clients coping skills to manage their distress, including mindfulness and yoga. I am experienced in guiding individuals, couples, and families through relationship challenges, grieving difficulties, life transitions/divorce, substance abuse, and trauma. I'm able to connect compassionately with resistant adolescents and teach their parents more effective ways to understand and support them through those often tumultuous years.

Welcome! I’m honored to support children, teens, and adults who feel deeply and often carry the weight of anxiety, depression, or life’s emotional challenges. Many I work with identify as neurodivergent, highly sensitive individuals, or LGBTQ+ and seek a safe, supportive space where their experiences are honored without judgment. I also support those facing perinatal and postpartum challenges. With children, I incorporate art, play, and nature therapy to foster emotional expression, healing, and growth. Together, we explore feelings with kindness and curiosity, building resilience and self-compassion.

Anxiety, Relationships, neurodivergence or just looking for answers?…Since 2012, my passion has been therapy/counseling, second only to being a father to my amazing kids. I have amassed extensive experiences and training along that way. As a result, I can match each client with tools and philosophy that get them closer to where they are trying to go. My approach to all things centers on finding solutions in life, and my sessions are no different. From day one, I seek solutions while being present with those who allow me to be a part of their journey.

You feel anxious, depressed and haunted by past experiences, keeping you from enjoying work & personal success. You’re great at your job; you can set goals and achieve them every time. But despite how good life might look from the outside, you struggle with feelings of shame or anxiety and can’t quite connect in meaningful relationships. You might be wondering if some of the experiences you had as a child, or earlier in life, are influencing the way you’re feeling today. It’s hard figuring that out on your own, and you’re ready to make those connections and finally feel better!

I am currently accepting new patients for regular therapy work. My passion is helping adults find their pathway to better mental & physical health. I like to develop a clear idea from the beginning of our work together as to what our goals will be, whether they be specific symptom reduction or exploring life transitions, improving relationships, healing from grief, or helping clients maintain changes in areas where they have been unsuccessful in the past. I also provide psychoeducational evaluations. The online calendar for Scholars Academy IQ testing is now live with openings starting in October.

Hi, I’m Kerstin, founder of Fig Tree Therapy, a licensed therapy practice in North Carolina. After several years serving as a grief counselor at a local hospice agency, I felt called to build my own practice. The lessons I learned as a grief guide continue to shape how I support clients through life’s many emotional and mental health challenges. I believe we all need a space where our pain is not something to be “fixed,” but rather honored and understood—where healing begins with being truly heard and supported as we each chart our own course toward a brighter future.

Relationships with ourselves and others are powerfully shaping forces in our lives and a place where positive change can make a lasting impact. I work with individuals, couples, and families to find creative solutions to problems and reimagine potential for growth and change. Imagination and creativity can be stifled by too much stress, yet engaging our creative minds can be an integral skill for making and maintaining positive changes. Curiosity is key, and I am here to open creative space for exploring solutions.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
