At our cores, we are relational beings who thrive when we feel connected to ourselves, to each other, and to the world around us. When we endure painful experiences or simply learn to abandon our wants and needs in exchange for belonging and acceptance as children, we can become out of touch with our true nature, but therapy is often a journey of leading us back, and then forward. I often work with artists, therapists, and people who generally think and feel deeply. If you are feeling stuck and could use support, we can begin to explore the experiences that have led you to this moment so that healing and progress can take place.

In my experience, in-person therapy is the best, most effective kind of therapy. Telehealth is a useful tool and I'm happy to be able to offer it, but it doesn't replace the value of people sitting down together and talking it out. Especially right now. Problems that may have been manageable before are more challenging than ever in a world that seems to be spinning wildly. Relationships, careers, families, and friends are where you can make changes to make your life better right now. And therapy can help. I hope, if you are struggling to make some changes, you will reach out and let me help.

It's hard to make sense of what's happening today in the world. It's also hard to make sense of what's happening with yourself. You feel so many things you can't even explain. As humans, we live in intersecting relationships: the earth, society, each other, work, spirituality (for some), individual and generational history. and our changing identities. Identifying and managing all of these relationships while moving in place is dizzyingly daunting. You want change, stability, a sense of purpose, and better connections. Even small moments of contentment would be a relief and a good start.

Seeking the support of a therapist can be a powerful step toward increasing self-awareness and the ability to change patterns that are no longer working. Change in therapy happens through a process of increased self-understanding, practicing new ways of engaging (with yourself, with others, with a particular problem or set of issues), and development and practice of coping strategies. I collaborate with my clients to identify and work toward treatment goals, using a combination of practical skills and deeper work to explore and repair root issues that may be contributing to current problems.

I work with people experiencing many challenges including: generalized anxiety, health/illness anxiety, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, grief, disenfranchised grief, difficult childhoods, relational trauma, ADHD. I can help you understand and modify what symptoms you're experiencing. Also, I can help you better understand why you behave they way you do in relationships, and help you adjust your patterns (e.g. codependence/people pleasing, being distant or hyper-independent, or, being overly controlling) that aren't serving you anymore. I work best with people who are interested in deep self exploration.

To follow my first mind is a Southern expression to explain the power and importance of listening and trusting one's intuition and gut instinct to care for and support oneself. Your first mind is knowing without conscious knowing, a higher power, the universe, you. It reminds you of your worthiness, your strength, and your connectedness. If you desire to experience life more authentically, to fortify your intuition, and to hear your first mind either for the first time or with more clarity. In that case, I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

My clients are sophisticated, insightful, and curious about themselves and others. Yet they may have found themselves feeling chronically depressed, anxious, or lost in life, and they might struggle with long-term patterns in their lives and relationships that they just can’t seem to change. Perhaps they have struggled with trauma or other experiences, thoughts, and feelings they fear nobody would understand. I enjoy working with people who desire not just new insights into their mind, but also a new way of experiencing themselves and others.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
