Men’s coaching groups are also an amazing resource for change.
Are you a man that feels stuck? Do you need help with confidence, masculinity, marriage/ro mantic relationships, dating, purpose, leadership, self-discipline, and friendships? Many men feel stuck right now, unsure of what it means to be a man and how to feel good about it. We often get conflicting messages from our parents, our partners, and the broader culture about manhood and masculinity. Many people equate masculinity with toxic masculinity. If you’re struggling to figure out how to be a strong, confident man that is also kind and loving, then coaching or a men’s group may be right for you.

You are the most important person you will ever meet. Why not be on good terms with yourself? I view therapy as a relationship between two people devoted to facing the deepest truths of our lives so we can be healed. I believe that coming to know ourselves and understanding why we suffer leads to genuine change, a return to health, and gives birth to a more authentic life. In therapy, we discover that we heal through relating, because the wounds that occurred in relationships must be healed in a relationship. For what was unbearable when alone, becomes bearable when shared.

Many, though not all, of his clients have experienced significant trauma.
Bill (he doesn't need you to call him Dr. Pekoc) will be a good fit for clients who are looking for a non-authoritarian, conversational therapist. His ideal clients will be interested in helping to develop their own goals and will be motivated to develop insights into not just how to manage the concerns that brought them to therapy but why those concerns manifested in the first place. Bill is committed to being non-judgmental, non-directive, straightforward, and direct. Many, though not all, of Bill's clients seek long-term therapy not only for addressing symptoms but also for fostering personal growth.

The crux of my approach is simple, but versatile: I use anything and everything available to make breakthroughs possible. We all do better with an expansive toolkit. EMDR for "stuckness" / trauma and Gott man methods for couples to repair & connect. (Well worth YouTubing either for a sense of them.) Once we understand each other and you are insight-equipped, we'll put insight into action. But in ways that feel authentic to your personal experience of things. Clients often report that my approachable, humorous, "very hu man" style makes therapy a much more effective experience even when exploring difficult content.

Immediate telehealth openings are available with colleagues within my practice. Visit the website for information or outreach for a phone screen to determine if I may connect you with a like-minded clinician. We strive for more than patient “functioning” as an end goal, supporting patients toward self-actualization and greater inner connection. If you feel stuck, consider a depth-oriented approach. Many patients have only experienced supportive or solution-focused therapies, not realizing how these approaches inadvertently maintained their unhelpful patterns. Together, we will strive to find the right answer, not just the quick one.

I don’t see the relationship as therapist/client, but rather hu man being to hu man being.
My name is David Welch, M.A., LCPC. I am a licensed clinical professional counselor in Illinois. I have over 30 years of experience in working with both mental health, as well as addiction and substance use. I have worked in a variety of settings including inpatient, residential, outpatient, private practice, and Telehealth. I truly believe that people are more than a diagnosis. I see clients as being stuck rather than as mentally ill. Therapy is about helping others to recognize their negative patterns and creating new more empowering patterns. I love helping others to create massive positive changes in their lives.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
