In my practice, by face to face sessions or by using online Telehealth confidential therapy, I work with clients to feel comfortable and to form a bond, based on trust, that will foster a relaxed positive therapeutic interaction. It is important to me that, from the very first session, the client can communicate his or her story and feels heard, so that I can understand the presenting issues, communicate hope, and formulate mutually agreeable goals to achieve in our work together.

My desire to become a Social Worker began when I was 12 years old. The Counselor at our school was also our basketball coach. He often smiled, appearing to have fun with my peers. During road trips, I had the chance to get to know more about him. Essentially, I decided I wanted to be him one day. Many of my clients have experienced chronic illness (including cancer, kidney disease), grief/loss, family conflict, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, loss of routine and/or job, trauma, loss of identity. Developing safety & trust will be part of our initial work. Your vulnerabilities/uncertainties are welcome, and you are not alone.

What does it really mean, to "age well"? While getting older offers many rewards, it can also present significant challenges including transition to retirement, chronic illness, and loss of a spouse, among others. Depression, anxiety, and grief are not uncommon in the face of such difficulties. How can you best cope? What’s the best way to ask for support from your family, friends, or community at large? How to find optimal programs and resources for yourself or your loved one, and to plan for the future?

Are you or a family member struggling with an addiction, loss, stressful job or other personal concern? As an active and engaging therapist, I have observed that when the chemistry between therapist and client works, the process of therapy can provide a multitude of results: curbing self-destructive patterns of behavior, providing relief from painful emotions, increasing productivity at work, increasing behavioral control and achieving greater meaning in one's life. I believe that these meaningful changes occur when there is a joint process of discovery in which the therapist attends to the expressed needs and goals of the client.

David Gruskin is a compassionate, nonjudgmental, and warm clinician who believes it is important to have support when facing challenges, transitions, loss, and uncertainty.
I can start explaining a little about myself.  How I like to work.  The last years, I've been working with a mixture of individuals using primarily psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, and CBT techniques.  I like to work with a small number of patients often over a period of time. So no quick fixes here. And if, after this initial session, you decide to move forward, we should aim to meet at this time and this location each and every week. The purpose, or the aim, is to create a time and a space which is entirely yours, week on week.

There are many reasons to speak with a psychologist. Do you feel very stressed out? Do you feel like you are losing control, or falling apart? Are you very hard on yourself? Do you get carried away with anger? Do you lack meaning or direction in your life? Do you avoid doing more and more out of fear? Loneliness, worthlessness, dread, helplessness, grief, self-doubt, and hopelessness: These are some of the difficult internal experiences that people may suffer and struggle against. They may overwhelm and negatively impact all parts of life, including relationships with family, friends, or employers, and undermine personal goals.

I believe therapy is a joint venture. It takes both of us to create expertise about your unique psychology and spirit, and explore how that self-knowledge calls you. I am typically very active with you, suggesting interventions, offering ideas, giving "homework" between sessions. I'm experienced with depression, anxiety, trauma, post-trauma, sexuality, loss, and the search for meaning in life. These days, I see myself not only as a psychotherapist, but also as a teacher in Eastern Philosophies, especially the Tao. I weave these philosophies into the therapy to a greater or lesser extent, depending upon your wishes, and our agreement

There are many reasons to explore psychotherapy. New patients may find themselves stuck in old patterns, such as addictive behaviors, difficulties relating to others, or overwhelming worry. They may also struggle with new challenges, like grief, health problems, or retirement. As a therapist, I help patients consider new ways of engaging with the world and with themselves. My goal is for patients to translate insights and skills into noticeable changes in their lives.

I approach my clients collaboratively with a warm, accepting and compassionate attitude. I believe developing a trusting relationship is the most effective foundation to approach the hardships and mind habits we all face in life. I use specific CBT and Mindfulness skills to help my clients reduce symptoms and feel better soon. Anxiety, obsessiveness and depressed feelings can be significantly reduced while I teach clients how to govern the mind, creating new habits and strategies. Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
