I am a Licensed Clinical Social worker with extensive experience in treating adults. At some point, we all have to deal with the effects of life's stressors, be they at the loss of a relationship or job; a parent's or spouse's illness; the onset of a medical condition; conflict within a relationship; or other sudden and unwelcome changes in life's routine. Everyone has strengths that are silenced by such stressors and I specialize in helping clients to deal with those stressors by bringing back those strengths. Through conversation, support, and humor, I help clients learn to feel strong again in the face of adversity.

I have extensive experience working in the area of loss and bereavement .
Therapy begins where you are. People seek therapy for many different reasons. Whether you are dealing with a particular crisis or simply want to know more about yourself, therapy can lead to a better understanding of who we are and what has shaped us. Through these discoveries, therapy can allow you to identify old patterns that have been standing in your way of living the life you want.

If you are not sure how to navigate this part of your life, you are probably at a major change point. Next steps might seem unclear. Where to begin? We start where you are. Helping you to work through redefining life events such as career change, re-location, grief , and loss are key areas of my practice focus. Religious trauma is a specialty. Going though life without meeting your edges is not possible, but growing beyond them is. Therapy supports you to develop the skill, tools, and perspective that you can move past your edge, and into your evolution.

If you identify as queer or unclear/unidentified along the sexual orientation spectrum; with mid/end-of-life struggles, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, grief / loss , with sex offender history or inter-generational fantasy; nudist, kink/fetish proclivity, you are welcome.
The origin of your struggle is fuzzy or clear to you, I invite you to come begin the journey of clearing the roadblocks that have become obstacles to being your whole, joyous, and most effective self. I commit to creating a safe and sacred space for you to be yourself - to risk, receive and integrate new skills into your life to receive the outcome you seek. We are equal travelers on this planet and it is from this place where you will always be greeted by me; human first, therapist 2nd - with respect, dignity, and non-judgment always being at the center of our time together.

My areas of strength include grief and loss , fertility concerns and pregnancy loss , mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD, problems with adjustment or life transitions, relationship struggles, college student development, trauma, and health and wellness issues.
I view psychotherapy as a tool for self-development, self-exploration, greater connectedness, and the opportunitiy to feel deeply understood by a caring professional. I also see the therapeutic process as a collaborative one that helps clients gain greater insight, improve self-esteem, and a sense of well being while making real life-long changes.

Utilizing EMDR, I have treated clients with traumatic loss and grief , helping them move through an often complicated mourning process.
As a psychotherapist, I help clients better understand how we carry old wounds of hurt, loss and trauma into the present and how those wounds affect the way we manage our lives and relationships. Life stress--marriage/divorce, parenting, vocation, illness, loss --as well as the challenges of the lifecycle itself--young adulthood, midlife, senescence--can stir up old, unprocessed turmoil. Having been trained in psychodynamic, family systems and EMDR, I strive to attentively, compassionately and actively engage with my clients so that they might free themselves of old wounds and current impasses to live more loving and whole lives.

I also frequently work with patients who suffer from anxiety and depression as well as those who are struggling with relationship issues, life transitions and grief .
Together we will explore the events and patterns that have shaped your life in order to understand your current situation. As connections are made between past and present, you gain insight and perspective in a way that helps you to manage things more effectively. New skills replace old ways of coping in an approach that balances exploration with teaching practical and concrete ways to manage distress. My aim is for you to feel supported, understood and encouraged to learn more about yourself in order to experience your struggles differently.

In a grief -averse society that says to "get over" or "move on" from the death of a loved one, in a medical system that pathologizes bereavement as a disorder as early as one year after someone's death , in social circles that force toxic positivity, platitudes, and unsolicited advice on grieving folks, I long to offer a different presence. I come alongside traumatically bereaved children and families to offer meaningful and non-judgmental support in the wake of an unexpected or violent death , or after a prolonged illness. Death and trauma generate complex grief responses that deserve to be heard, honored, explored, and integrated.

This could include struggles with college decisions, college adjustment, career dilemmas, parenting, relationship problems, grief or low self esteem.
Sometimes in life we question where we are going or cannot seem to find a path to get to where we want to be ~ to be happy with ourselves and at peace. The world today may be creating more stressors in our life than what we are use to causing a feeling of imbalance, depression or anxiety. My goal is to create a safe, respectful and caring atmosphere where one may explore and begin to understand one's thoughts, behaviors and feelings. Together with my clients, we explore their dreams, challenges and fears. Along this journey there can be self-discovery, problem solving and self love.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
