Therapy is different for everyone. I believe that our early relationships and experiences deeply shape how we see ourselves and respond to feelings. I use a flexible model of therapy that draws from Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, neuropsychology, feminist/multicultural, and attachment theories. An emphasis is placed on appreciating the current emotional coping system before attempting to change it. I see my role as helping you develop a relationship with the parts of yourself that you may avoid, reject, or fear. My role is not to fix you (-you're not broken), and it is not to solve your problems.

My style is highly interactive, focused on communication, and achieving client goals. It is important to me that my clients are comfortable with me and know that I am available to them. Making life changes is not always easy, but I believe in human resiliency and strength. As an example of this philosophy, I have changed my name back to my maiden name. My mother passed away from Alzheimer's disease, and for this reason, to honor her, I wanted to take my name back... human resiliency!!!

Do you have a child who needs extra time on in-class exams, the SAT, ACT, or other necessary learning accommodations? Each year, countless students fall through the cracks and find that their school is unable or unwilling to provide the necessary psychoeducational evaluations and support. The implications are profound, as these students, through no fault of their own, are denied vital accommodations like extra time in the classroom and on standardized tests.

I am a client-centered therapist who uses the strength-based perspective to help individuals identify their difficulties and build coping skills to manage their symptoms. With this in mind, my ideal client would be someone dedicated to introspection, open to new perspectives and information, and wiling to challenge themselves to grow. I would love my clients to leave sessions stronger, more informed and a little "lighter."

Psychotherapy is a unique experience, in that it is encouraged that you share all of your thoughts & feelings, to include those that you might withhold in other contexts. Ideally, you will have an experience of feeling affirmed/acknowledged, thoroughly listened to, and seen as a complex person. That said, it can take a long time to feel free enough to share yourself in this way, and it is important that we move at your pace, plus respect that there are reasons why certain pieces of you are protected away. Your symptoms/difficulties are there for various reasons. You lead the way; I will support you in your process.

Life can often be overwhelming, and incredibly difficult to navigate. At times it seems like everyone else is moving forward while you’re just stuck in the exact same place. You're tired of living with negative thoughts, constant anxiety and self loathing. You may be in a relationship but have the lost the spark and are fighting and you don’t know where it went or how to get it back. Perhaps you feel misunderstood by those around you and have trouble articulating what you are feeling. You want someone to truly understand the complex person that you are. If this struggle sounds familiar I might just be the person that can help you.

Jewish Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.

How can I recognize an effective Jewish therapist?

As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.

Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?

No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?

A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?

The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
