At Greenpoint Psychotherapy, we are dedicated to challenging the impacts of structural inequalities such as racism, sexism, classism, anti-trans discrimination, oppression, stigma, and ableism. Our practice is committed to fostering compassion, inclusivity, and diversity by creating supportive, growth-orientated spaces with room for honest discussion. We believe in continually expanding our understanding of the impact of intersectionality to recognize and address our own biases. We imagine a world where mental health is de-stigmatized. We work toward this by empowering individuals, couples, and biological, and chosen family systems.

I work well with people who feel like they are cycling through repeating patterns in their life, particularly in relationships with their family, at work, or in relationship with their Self. My clients are insightful and brave. They tend to need gentle encouragement to see things slightly differently and develop more security. I use a combination of different types of therapies and techniques, depending on the particular problems someone is struggling with. These techniques help people establish boundaries in their families, behavioral change for harmful habits and addictions, and assertive communication skills.

Life gets rough – it can be overwhelming and difficult to manage at times. It may feel like no one is listening or understands the struggles you’re going through. My goal is to provide a safe and affirming space for you. You’ll have a voice to tell your story, express your emotions, and not feel judged. Everyone has their own unique experiences and although I may not have experienced your situation and circumstances, I'm willing to do the work and listen to everything you have to say. As a 1.5 gen Chinese-American, I also understand the difficulties of navigating through racism, family dynamics, clashing values, and identity.

Since 1982 we have practiced our NLP communication with each other and this helped us as we raised our family.
I have been working with clients for over 30 years combining my NLP/Hypnosis/Dance Movement Therapy and traditional Clinical Psychology training. My orientation is short term solution focussed. When a client comes for a session we identify their goals and determine what technique(s) would be most helpful. My clients will often say that they have received lifelong tools and have new perspectives and breakthroughs with themselves and their relationships.

You miss the relationship that you and your partner used to have. When it felt fun and carefree. Now, it feels like you’re fighting more than you’re enjoying each other. You’re so tired of feeling alone in your emotions. Your partner isn’t getting it. You’re having difficulty navigating how you handle your finances, family issues, division of labor, and fertility or parenting issues. You check your phone to numb out for a minute and all you see are pictures of other people’s perfect relationships, dream families, fancy vacations and clean houses. You can't help but feel less than.

I am an alumna of the Family and Couples Treatment Services division of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, where I also received a certificate from the Integrated Trauma Program of the Trauma Studies Center.
I believe that our emotions - even when they are unpleasant to feel - can serve as compasses, leading us towards truths about our experiences, ourselves, and what we need most. In our work together, one of my goals is to encourage you to approach your emotions with openness and curiosity, and in turn, show up for yourself with patience and compassion.

This often means exploring personal history, family background, foundational experiences and key relationships in your life, as well as hopes for the future – all of which may impact how you're feeling today.
If life has felt particularly hard or upsetting recently, know that you don’t have to navigate it alone. As a psychotherapist, I meet with people living with anxiety, depression, grief and more. I frequently work with adults who have experienced childhood trauma, helping them to understand past experiences and thrive in the present and future. My clients have often realized that their current coping skills are no longer working, and in seeking therapy are taking an important, difficult and necessary step to feel better.

Schedule a free consultation easily using this link: calendly.com/brian-ackerman-lmsw/consult. Life would be so much easier without uncomfortable feelings, painful experiences, and inner turmoil, but here we are. As humans, we are the universe getting to know itself, in all our joy and pain. In my practice, I aim to accompany you, using a trauma-informed lens and psychoanalytic approach to explore your unconscious, on your journey inward. I believe each of us has so much to learn and teach from our experiences and perspectives if we can give ourselves the space and self-compassion to process them.

Many people begin therapeutic work with me because they are ready to make a change but do not know how or where to begin. Sometimes work stress, life changes, relationships and family problems can become stressful or hard to manage. This can lead to depression, anxiety, or unhealthy ways of coping. I will help you develop your own insight and understanding as we establish new skills and strategies for sustaining change. I will listen attentively and respond fully. My style in therapy is active, calm, and non-judgmental; I work to create a confidential space to explore the issues and challenges that are most important to you.

You might be at a point in your life where navigating relationships causes you a lot of stress and uncertainty. You may have just gotten out of a relationship and feel like you’re making the same mistakes over and over again or that you can’t tell what you’re doing wrong. Perhaps you’re still in a relationship but are unsure about how to feel about it. Maybe you’re not sure what kind of relationship you would like to have with your family. Or maybe you're realizing that your friendships aren’t satisfying in the ways you wished they would be.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
