The step to enter into counseling is a courageous one, it encompasses your willingness to connect, to be vulnerable, and to seek hope in healing. I see counseling as a way for clients to make change, to liberate one’s self from patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that may not be serving you effectively. These patterns are often imposed by society, family, and ones' own culture and/or gender. Counseling is a space to help navigate all that comes with life’s changes. In practice, I specialize in anxiety, depression, grief/loss, OCD, infertility, postpartum, relationships, job change/loss, and other adjustment related stressors.

Throughout my training at the Family Institute at Northwestern University, I realized that there is no one size fits all therapy model.
I am passionate about providing individualized, effective and high quality therapy to children, adolescents, young adults and families. Over the past 5 years, I have gained extensive experience in treating anxiety disorders, OCD, selective mutism, specific phobias, ADHD, behavioral issues and other individual and family stressors. While a lot has changed in that time frame, one thing that has not is the limitless capacity children have to learn, grow, thrive, and demonstrate resilience. I am deeply committed to helping my clients realize that it is okay to step outside of their comfort zone and that they can do hard things

Most often, I have worked with clients with eating disorders, life transitions, and mood disorders. I believe in a harm-reduction approach that allows autonomy and collaboration within the relationship. My goal is to guide clients to a more meaningful life that is reflective of their own values. I will always plan to meet a client where they are at in recovery. That might include this being your first therapy experience, or your hundredth and we need to find what will work for you to have a sustainable recovery.

Hi! I’m Rachel Nicholson a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Psychotherapist, and I could not be more excited to work with you! I know what it feels like to be scared to take the first step; to go through the hard work in order to grow. Because of that, it makes me the therapist I am today. Empathetic, understanding, and compassionate. These qualities are what I bring into our sessions in order to support you in becoming the best version of yourself. I want you to feel comfortable enough to share anything that comes to mind without any fear or judgement–knowing that we are in this together.

You are exhausted. Physically and emotionally. Even though you are working so hard to do all the right things, you still end up feeling miserable and unfulfilled. Your days are spent going through a never-ending lists of tasks in your head and your nights are spent trying to escape and find some kind of relief. You long for moments of happiness, but when they come, you can't enjoy them because you know they won't last. You can't shake this nagging feeling that something bad will soon follow. You want to feel comfortable with yourself and your decisions. You want to believe that all this effort will lead to something good.

You’re looking for a therapist who is approachable, attentive, and actively engaged—someone who can celebrate and see you, hang in the hard times, who can shift your perspective, facilitate new insights and provide concrete tools and strategies to help you better navigate life and relationships. No matter what we may be struggling with, we can all benefit from a safe and open space to process our unique issues. No problem is too small to share with someone who can help you explore ways to deal with it and to improve your overall quality of life.

I help parents and kids learn to speak the same language, so that parents can respond to challenging behaviors in an effective and confident way, and kids feel safe, supported, and understood. Nobody heals or changes in a vacuum, and so I focus on building supports throughout the systems that my clients live in.

I believe in taking a warm, nonjudgmental, collaborative approach to therapy; I truly believe that you are the expert of your experience and I am here as a coach to help support you in reaching your goals. I approach therapy as both an art and a science; the art of human connection and the science of evidenced-based therapies such as CBT, DBT and ACT. I am also a social worker at heart and like to bring in an understanding of our society to help people of color, LGBTQIA+ folks and other marginalized communities feel empowered to navigate and cope with the impact of these systems of today's world.

I'm a Taiwanese/Chinese second-generation immigrant who grew up in the Midwest. Born to first-generation immigrants, I've witnessed the ways my parents’ migration experiences and has worked to understand and break cycles of generational trauma. I've dealt with the forces of assimilation, gendered and racialized identity formation, and the need to establish a sense of belonging within an immigrant family surrounded by predominantly Christian, white communities. I've worked with individuals/couples that are challenged by anxiety, trauma, depression, stress, family/relationship conflicts, racial/sexual identities, LGBTQ+ issues, etc.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
