I’m a licensed creative arts therapist who’s passionate about helping people like you embrace the messy truth of life. While we often long for issues and solutions to come wrapped up in a tidy little package, that’s not often the reality. I believe that accepting and leaning into this truth is the key to a meaningful, balanced life. I help folks from all walks of life tap into their own inner wisdom. I especially enjoy supporting people in navigating anxiety, trauma, and communication breakdowns within their relationships. Members of the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities are wholeheartedly welcome in my practice.

Talking is not always the best approach to therapy-especially if you are someone who struggles with opening up or finding words for your feelings. Working creatively allows you to move past blocks and defenses to release old patterns and create the life you want to be living. Whether you have a specific issue, feel stuck or overwhelmed, or are curious to explore yourself more, a creative approach may be key in supporting you in finding relief and accessing a greater source of healing within you.

It can be intimidating and nerve-wracking to seek out therapy. But in doing so, you are already taking the first big step towards healing and taking good care of yourself. I believe that gaining insight about our past experiences and how they continue to influence our relationships, thinking, and emotional lives is an important aspect of the healing and growth process. I also strongly believe in the experiential and relational aspects of therapy where we work collaboratively to understand how our therapeutic relationship informs the work and what it can tell us about you.

Life is full of challenges! And while we work through and overcome many obstacles that come our way, there are times when we feel too overwhelmed to manage them on our own. Challenges can take many forms, whether as trauma, anxiety, depression, regular self-criticism, shame, processing a loss, or conflict with someone important in our lives. These forms of suffering deserve kindness, understanding, and support. The right guidance can help us move through and decrease these symptoms so we can feel greater contentment and connection.

In the process of navigating life, we naturally encounter obstacles. Whether you are enduring difficult life transitions, trying to make sense of your experiences, or navigating tricky interpersonal relationships, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Therapy is a space to work towards clarity in an empathetic, thoughtful, and authentic manner. Looking at ourselves in the context of individual, interpersonal, and cultural cycles allows us to more clearly understand our life experiences and internal reactions.

Are you feeling isolated in your relationships? While romance may begin in an instant, long-term relationships are not easy to maintain alone. No matter where you are in your relationship, seeking guidance, opening the lines of communication, and establishing safety in emotional expression are the cornerstones of any lasting and fulfilling relationship. I aim to empower my clients to realize the strengths they already possess. I work with them, both individually and as couples and families, to utilize those unique strengths to develop a positive narrative for their lives and relationships.

I view therapy as a collaborative process in which insight, wisdom and healing arise though a relationship of trust and curiosity. You might feel depressed, anxious, confused, frustrated, stuck or that your life has lost direction. Something in you knows it doesn’t have to be this way and therapy can help. By welcoming and exploring all parts of you, transformation and healing is possible. I value the experience of each individual and tailor my approach to your unique needs in a holistic, non-pathologizing manner.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
