I'm not sure that I have an "ideal client". I am someone who is immensely curious about the human mind, who loves a challenge, and who always wants to help. I work with anyone and everyone and I'm always looking to experience something new! I am experienced in areas such as criminal justice issues, anger management, self-harm, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, trauma, addictions, mood disorders, personality disorders, anxiety, maternal issues, family issues, and more. I have worked in crisis stabilization, corrections, and residential trauma treatment, allowing me to develop a very well-rounded and diverse clinical background.

I have a deep passion for helping trauma survivors, combat veterans, and people who are struggling with addiction to accomplish and sustain meaningful recoveries in their lives. I provide a non-judgmental, compassionate, and safe therapeutic space to help them achieve their goals. The most rewarding thing for me as a therapist is helping a client work through and heal from the trauma and shame that is so commonly the underlying cause of their substance use, addiction, or mental health challenges.

I know life is complicated and you would not be seeking therapy if you were not in one of those complicated moments in life, whether it be about a relationship with your spouse, your child or simply with yourself. My goal is to help you find a way to navigate those muddy waters and to make life not quite so rocky. I personally have a passion for parents and kids. I have worked in the field of child welfare and adoption and have seen the impact trauma has on the young and the old. I recognize how early childhood trauma impacts an individual throughout their life and impacts all relationships.

We are all authors to our own stories, and experts in our own lives. When our stories are silenced, harmed, or rejected, this can affect our lives and identities in many ways. It takes immense bravery to let a stranger look past the cover of your story, and you deserve a space where the chapters you wish to process will be handled with respect and care. Whether you are new to therapy or have been participating in therapy for years, I believe that my role is to sit with you wherever you are at in life. Therapy is hard work, and I honor this through taking our time together at your own pace.

Finding one’s self can be trying and often feels circular and defeating. Many people find themselves feeling as though they are continuing the same patterns to little avail. I believe that most of our behaviors serve a purpose for better, or for worse. By gaining greater understanding into our patterns, we are able to gain flexibility in how we approach life’s trials and tribulations. Through an authentic and warm relationship, I believe individuals can find ways of approaching their difficulties with confidence. Whether situational or organic, I therapeutically address most difficulties you, or someone you care for, may possess.

I really do enjoy working with individuals and groups and seek to have an authentic and warm therapeutic relationship with my clients. Building trust is paramount to successful treatment and my approach is to start with a more open and conversational tone after assessment. The process will focus on feelings and creating a space to foster more sensitive conversations. My own life experiences have guided me to this ‘feeling work’. My life’s purpose is to use the gift for seeing the strengths in people to assist the client in finding their genuine self. Past clients have described me as “caring”, “empathic” and “helpful”.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
