Are you feeling disconnected from yourself or your relationship? I can help! I enjoy working with and empowering adolescents, couples, and the elderly to overcome obstacles and process through trauma that impacts growth. I also use qEEG Neurofeedback to address the struggles associated with ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, autism, and behavioral issues in children and adults. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive treatment modality and changes are noticed faster than with a pharmacological approach.

Every one of us experiences seasons in life when we feel completely overwhelmed by our circumstances and are unable to just "shake it off." This might be especially true in the aftermath of a crisis, a stressful event or traumatic experience (such as loss of a job, the death of a loved one, a broken relationship, an accident). It's also true for those who work in "helping" professions, such as Emergency First Responders. Are you looking for someone to understand your feelings of grief, anger, sadness, or confusion? Someone to help you get back to "normal?"

I am very experienced counseling adult men & couples.
I promote improvement in my clients' quality of moods, relationships & sense of purpose. I meet clients where they are in their lives, relationships & moods in a manner that is accepting and encouraging. I believe people are their own best resource for understanding their present challenges, how they have arrived here, & having resilience to heal & change toward their goals. When clients are very stuck in negative moods, destructive behaviors or relational patterns, I help them engage these through mindfulness, emotionally-focused & trauma healing therapies, which are based on understanding natural processes of healing & growth.

I specialize in working with adult individuals and couples, in addition to families.
I named my business Life Journey Counseling because I believe that we are all on a journey. We typically have ideas about where we are headed and how we will get there, but life often deals us something different...something we didn't plan for. How we handle that is the key to our own personal growth. I am inspired by the power of people to help themselves, but also a firm believer in the importance of having support and help when we need it. I help people through the therapeutic relationship we form to realize their full potential.

Most importantly, I focus on our relationship and therapeutic bond.
Are you ready to break down that wall and finally connect to the world around you? To live without painful memories and emotional flashbacks? Trauma - especially complex trauma - affects everything: your humanity, your identity, your ability to thrive. My clients often experience a negative self-image, depression, severe emotional ups and downs, and a near-constant sense of dread. Worst of all, they feel like they don’t know themselves and can’t relate to other people. This is not surprising considering my clients usually have a history of childhood abuse and/or neglect exacerbated by boundary violations in adulthood.

I believe the relationship between the therapist and client is the most important part of therapy.
I am a licensed professional counselor based in Colorado, dedicated to assisting teenagers and adults in gaining insights into their lives. Employing a person-centered approach and motivational interviewing, I engage in validation, emotional support, and reflection to foster a supportive environment for clients throughout their journey. Additionally, I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to equip clients with tangible tools for daily life, addressing cognitive distortions, engaging in exposure therapy, and recognizing thought patterns. The transformative power of increased self-awareness is profound.

Welcome. My name is Trey, and I’m glad you’re here. You can expect to be heard, validated, and encouraged with me as your counselor—and you can expect to be challenged in areas where more insight or action is needed for you to reach the tipping point that leads to breakthrough moments. I approach counseling from an integrative model, with a particular emphasis in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I believe counseling is highly relational, and once a strong therapeutic relationship is formed we identify your specific goals and work towards them.

It is brave for you to begin to explore therapists to partner with you in this process.
Perhaps you have recently been through an experience—which you may or may not have had any control over—and it left you feeling lost or wounded. Perhaps you are at a juncture in your life and need to process your next steps. Perhaps you are noticing some reoccurring patterns that stem from messages you picked up as a child. Or maybe you just need someone neutral to talk to! Any of these important moments (and so many more!) are worth exploring with someone you trust. I would be honored to partner with you as you do this healing work!

The path to invulnerability is to be -in- vulnerability. With 8,000 hours of wilderness therapy experience, I honed my skills guiding young adults and teens through a myriad of neurodivergent, mental, emotional, and personality challenges in the backcountry. My journey continued with nearly 1,500 hours of psychedelic integration work and coaching. My primary focus is 'religious harm reduction for LGBTQIA+ couples,' though I serve diverse populations. Using somatic techniques and Chinese philosophy, I help clients navigate their path back to self-compassion and connection.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
