"I'm responsible for who I am. My task is to free myself sufficiently so that I can respond in the present moment not from past programming. That's what freedom is." Initially a practitioner in nonprofits and community behavioral health programs and more recently private practice, i have come to find as a more recent trauma-informed therapist, symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and relational issues are often expressions of unresolved grief and trauma. I am fascinated by the power of lasting change that comes from intentional, deep work.

Professional experiences have prepared me to work with people experiencing serious illness, grief and loss and adoption issues.
Humans are social animals - by nature we need to feel connected ("in relationship"). Life today is SO stressful! If we feel connected we can manage our stressful lives. If we don't feel connected then it doesn't matter what else is happening - life won't feel very satisfying. Through the therapeutic process you and I will work on improving your relationships with yourself and others, which can help you feel more safe and secure, and that your life is more meaningful and satisfying. When your relationships are better, you have more focus and energy for life!

All of us are confronted with challenges on multiple levels during the difficult times in our lives. Maybe there's a feeling of being stuck, of not living in the flow of your life, difficulty making decisions, not getting restful sleep or feeling misunderstood. You might be having difficulty feeling compassion towards others or yourself. Maybe you are experiencing emotional anguish, grief or loss. During times of challenge we are called to live our lives with increased self-awareness and confidence, creativity and optimism.

People come in to work on a wide range of concerns such as; relationship issues, work related stressors, depression, anxiety, family/parenting issues, grief and loss, isolation, health and aging issues, retirement transition, and stressors due to Covid.
It's not always easy to pick up the phone and make the initial call to reach out for help. It seems the last thing we want to do is talk about our problems especially to a total stranger. If you are reading this then you are considering making that call. I offer a safe and nurturing environment for problem solving and healing to take place. I have an eclectic approach to therapy and will employ tools that are based on your individual needs. We will work at your pace and comfort level to effect the changes you wish to make.

Sometimes we develop ways of thinking, acting, or feeling, that aren't useful to us anymore. Old patterns can leave us dissatisfied, depressed, unfulfilled, nervous, or disconnected from others. If you're struggling in some way, I can offer guidance to help you find your way back to yourself. The therapy I provide is grounded in compassion, non-judgment, and curiosity. Because we each have our own way of healing, my approach is integrative and tailored to your unique needs.

You may be noticing that you don't feel like yourself and wondering if there's something wrong with you. Your relationship has changed, it's hard to get any work done or focus. You dread getting out of bed, which leaves you feeling guilty and stuck. Or maybe you just worry about everything. You want to connect more deeply with your friends, or to experience the love in your relationship that you used to feel. You want more excitement and meaning. And on top of it all, you feel that no one understands what you go through or you have no one to talk to about it: you feel alone.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
