Unfortunately, the opposite happens, because they are not dealing with what needs attention, which results in a worsening of symptoms-depression, anxiety, anger, numbness, loneliness, disconnection, isolation, etc.
Welcome. I'd like to let you know how I see therapy. For me it is important to provide a trusting, compassionate and understanding atmosphere so people can feel safe to explore, discover and develop basic qualities and skills necessary to grow and heal. I am a mindfulness, body-based psychotherapist who teaches the profound healing power of heartfelt awareness and how it can help people free themselves from negative and painful thoughts, beliefs and emotions. What I see happening with people who come to me is a belief that if they can control and avoid their pain and suffering it will go away.

I provide a supportive therapeutic relationship and skillful psychotherapy. I can help with a range of concerns that people bring to therapy. These include improving relationships, working through difficult feelings, managing anxiety, changing troubling behaviors, strengthening a sense of identity and purpose, or improving ones ability to cope with difficult circumstances. I work with teen and adult clients; individuals, couples, and families. Along with talk therapy, when appropriate I enjoy incorporating non-verbal forms of expression such as drawing and sand tray work.

I have been a good fit for individuals looking for a supportive space to address anxiety and depression, needing movement in developing new coping strategies, seeking a deeper level of wellness and balance, or identity development. I have often found that I work well with those who have found therapy unhelpful in the past and are looking to give it another try. I also recognize that counseling is a different experience for those who identify as ADHD or ASD. The neuro-diverse culture is an area that I have experience in and that I find meaningful to work with.

I enjoying working with those who are seeking insight into what has led them to where they are, are looking to feel empowered in their lives and have a desire for change. I typically help clients with relational issues, anxiety, life transitions and trauma. I utilize a LGBTQIA+ affirmative, feminist lens and fuse together a psychodynamic approach and when appropriate Attachment Focused EMDR to target traumas. I also enjoy working with couples who are looking to tune up their communication skills and make time to reconnect.

I have worked with individual and couples for over thirty years, providing down-to-earth, compassionate counseling with issues such as depression, anxiety, loss, major life transitions, codependency, and trauma.
There are times in all our lives when our usual coping skills aren’t enough to manage serious and challenging life situations. I work to help clients develop tools to resolve the immediate problem that brought them to counseling, while also identifying and changing underlying beliefs and unhealthy patterns that may be creating problems in their lives and their relationships.

I have supported clients throughout their journeys with depressive, anxiety, personality and stress-related disorders, among other diagnoses, and have also worked with disordered eating/body image diagnoses.
Whether it be to better manage mental health symptoms, phase of life challenges, interpersonal difficulties, or challenges with identity/self-actualization/integration, I support clients as they look inward and identify how cognitive patterns affect behavior and emotions. I prefer to take a client-focused but also evidence-based approach to exploring the relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Through the application of this clinical matrix, clients can identify potential origins, triggers and patterns.

Perhaps it feels like you’ve been waiting your whole life to be seen, heard, and accepted. Trying to navigate this just reinforces feeling dismissed, invisible, and misunderstood. You’re ready for this next phase of your life, but you ask yourself, “Do I have to compromise who I am to move forward and actually enjoy my life?” It’s scary facing the next chapter in a society with rigid stereotypical rules. Memories of feeling trapped in bad relationships and awful jobs just gnaw at you. We can uncover the spark in you together so that you can find the strength to finally demand the respect you deserve in all aspects of your life

If you feel like you need some support or help to deal with life, I'm here. We all need help occasionally. Learning how to approach and overcome these challenges shape us and allow us to experience life to the fullest. Therapy allows us to look at where we may be blocked and helps us find our own answers to living an authentic life. I discovered that building a supportive relationship through therapy creates a safe place to explore life issues, understand difficult situations, learn new coping skills, enrich relationships, and work through situations that lead to a more authentic life.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
