The journey to knowing yourself can seem daunting, but taking the first step is both courageous and worthwhile. As a counselor, I believe that every person on this journey can benefit from some help and support along the way. I practice from a person-centered viewpoint and really believe that each of us is capable of making the choices we need to achieve the life we want. With a solution focused, strengths based approach, I seek to use past and present circumstances to carve a path forward that will result in greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and overall wellbeing.

Limited availability for new clients...Take what the game gives you, my dad always said… that is the number one mantra and peace of advice that has resonated with me during the swells and swallows this ocean of life has to offer. And like all humble humans, I believe growth, learning, and love are the foundations for change. I believe if we take what the game of life gives us, and can cope and adapt at whatever is thrown our way, we will have made it to our highest and truest potential.

Are you feeling stress or defeated by life and all its difficulties? You’re stuck in this cycle that you don’t understand or know how to get out of. You can’t figure out why your life is not moving forward. You try to talk to people about it, but you just don’t feel like they are hearing you. You’re feeling stressed, misunderstood and on edge more often than not. You just can’t seem to concentrate on anything and are constantly feeling overwhelmed. I get it. Sometimes it gets difficult to see through the obstacles and navigate through life’s problems. I would love to help assist you with becoming the best version of yourself!

Help is here. You've made it to the right place! I work with those struggling with depression & anxiety. My niche is women of color processing racial trauma, workplace micro aggressions, and struggles navigating being a person of color living in a predominantly homogenous community. The weight BIPOC folks feel is often too heavy to lift alone. Having a therapist who looks like you, and understands your cultural lens, is paramount to partnering with you to achieve wellness and recovery. Racial trauma looks like subtle slights + stress from internalized pain of tolerating intolerable systemic stressors based in a toxic culture.

Accepting new clients. ‘How did I get here’. ‘How do I get out,’ are common thoughts we all have. We learn to survive and do the best in the worlds we have grown up in; and sometimes we find ourselves going round and round in a strange sort of ‘uncomfortable comfort’ or ‘functional dysfunction’ of our lives. I strive to see the world through your lens and understand your unique family, cultural, and identity experiences. In every individual exists a craving to embody a life unburdened by excessive guilt and shame, while having the freedom to enjoy a more meaningful and joyful human experience.

People struggle in a wide spectrum of problems, in a range of settings that require a clinical approach and direction. Through a therapeutic approach, I help clients feel understood and safe because this is an important aspect of the healing process. Helping clients understand beliefs, emotions and behaviors is an important aspect for progress . While cognitive behavioral therapy is at the core of my approach, I believe that cognitive restructuring is essential in client progress. An eclectic approach is necessary because each client is unique and presents with unique strengths, needs and goals.

I have been at this for a long time and I feel that people know what's best and what they want for themselves, but they don't know how to get there at times. They need help, support and confidence in themselves to get there. There are so many variables that get in the way including various forms of abuse, mental health issues, family problems and drug and alcohol issues. I love to help clients work through these issues and concerns to help them restore confidence in themselves and be able to trust their own decisions. Most of all they deserve to look forward to their future!

At times we become trapped in repeating negative patterns, unable to achieve our goals. Life feels meaningless, lonely and cold. Clarity and direction needed for the pursuit of happiness is lost in the weight of the day blocking the energy needed for change and growth. Lost in this mindset we fill every space with condemning thoughts and fruitless behaviors. These thought patterns result in no room for healthy, life affirming emotion. Whatever we use to numb from the dark, also numbs out the light.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
