My therapeutic approach hinges on these core beliefs: 1) Thoughts are just thoughts. They aren’t always true, important, or meaningful. 2) Feelings aren’t problems to be fixed. They are all part of the human experience. 3) Taking values-aligned action is the key to living a life that fulfills you. These ideas are inspired by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an approach that involves accepting what is beyond our control, practicing loving self-compassion, and redirecting our behaviors toward the values that we hold most dearly.

It can be difficult to ask for help. As a therapist at Life After Birth, I work with women and couples facing all phases of parenthood, from conception and pregnancy through birth and beyond. The transition to motherhood is a profound shift in identity. Mothers and couples often need guidance and support to navigate their new world. Life after having a baby can be overwhelming, chaotic, and unmanageable, and so much of the emotional reality of motherhood is avoided in day-to-day conversation because of shame, fear, or embarrassment.

Maybe this is your first time seeking therapy, or perhaps you’ve tried before to find a therapist by whom you feel truly heard and seen. Psychotherapy seeks to resolve the conflicts that cause us to be at war with ourselves. It brings about sustainable and lasting change by breaking harmful cycles so that we can achieve a sense of wholeness, freedom, and well-being.

I often explain that psychotherapy is like physical therapy for the brain. With a combination of a safe, nurturing environment and evidence-based methods, you can develop new “pathways” in your brain and process your thoughts and feelings to help you heal and grow. I will approach our work together with a genuine curiosity and seek to collaboratively explore the different parts of your story. Having lived in several different countries, I have great respect for and extensive experience working with people from various backgrounds.

Life, man. Life. With the highs, come the inevitable lows which can be difficult to navigate, much less tolerate. Sometimes the lows look like sadness or irritability and feel like stuckness. Sometimes the lows look like not connecting with your partner, your child, or yourself. Sometimes the lows are just hard to describe, but they certainly don't feel good. We work together to provide you with the tools you need to move through your stuckness, your lack of connection, your difficulty communicating, or whatever it is that creates frustration or pain, in order to help you feel lighter, better, and maybe even hopeful.

Creative individuals struggle with self esteem and career issues. Additionally, depression, anxiety, trauma, or a significant life transition, can interfere with career and relationships. Why haven’t we achieved success and fulfillment? -- We go through life feeling there must be more; more to our potential, our relationships, or just more? We imagine meeting the perfect partner and staying in love with them forever. Why can’t we find that perfect partner?

As a therapist, I create a warm, safe, nonjudgmental environment for children, adolescents, adults, and couples to be able to open up and share their feelings and make sense of what is troubling them. I strive to empower people and help them realize the strength and potential they possess. My experience has prepared me well to be able to interact and connect with a wide variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. I am especially confident in my ability to connect with children/teens that are resistant to or skeptical of therapy.

Is your inner voice more critic than cheerleader? Maybe perfectionism has you feeling frozen, struggling to live the life you really want, even though you're not quite sure why it has such a stronghold. You're constantly comparing yourself to others, downplaying your feelings, and saying yes when you really mean no. Your mind is stuck in a rut and it's getting harder and harder to wade through the muck of self-doubt. You're wanting to truly connect with yourself, to get to know who you are when you actually believe in yourself and trust your thoughts and feelings, but self-compassion and self-confidence feel just out of reach.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
