"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."—Viktor Frankl— Change is possible for everyone. We can learn new skill sets for challenging situations. We can look at seemingly hopeless circumstances from another perspective. We can apply our strengths and abilities in new ways. We can gain a feeling of peace from acceptance. I feel honored to join my clients as they accept the quest for change.

I enjoy working with clients with a variety of backgrounds, life circumstances, and struggles. I especially enjoy working with those who are struggling with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief and loss, addiction, and trauma related issues. Often times, these clients need to be heard. They need to be reminded that they have a plethora of internal strengths. They need coping skills and insights to get through their challenges and be stronger and healthier. I appreciate clients who come into therapy knowing that it is often a tough and uncertain road, but keep going despite setbacks, challenges, and struggles along the way.

There is nothing more powerful than trusting yourself, believing that you can handle the bumps and valleys of life. I believe every single one of us has this resilience inside of us and sometimes we just need some gentleness, play, and connection in our mind and body to get back there. I will sit, stand, and play next to you in these hard feelings and I will do my best to bring authenticity and courage to the room together as you learn to trust and love yourself wholeheartedly.

I believe that mental health is an integral part of our wellbeing and should be attended to like one's own physical health. The therapeutic modalities I have experience in are trauma-focused and person-centered. I enjoy supporting children ages 6 to 18 years old to improve their mental health and heal psychological wounds.

The strength and courage it takes to be able to share our experiences is a beautiful and sacred part of humanity. As a trauma therapist, my ultimate goal and passion is to help individuals express, embrace and empower their true authentic selves. When we can live honoring our true selves, we create meaning and find purpose in what we aspire to achieve in life. This empowers us to take control of our lives, and by working on our trauma, we have the opportunity to break free from shame, guilt, fear or resistance by embracing our true selves.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
