Trauma & difficult life issues can spin your life out of control. Have you been cheated on? Does this betrayal feel as if you've experienced a death? Or have you actually experienced the death of a loved one? Are you trying to make sense of what's happened? Or has your worst nightmare come true? You were sexually assaulted and just can't pretend any longer how much pain you're in? Or as a couple have you reached a breaking point. The relationship just isn't working? Or are you feeling hopeless and want to give up on life? Are stress or edginess causing you sleeplessness and lack of focus. Your life has turned upside down.

I have extensive training in PTSD, OCD, depression, anxiety disorders, and couples therapy.
Therapy can transform both our inner and outer worlds by making sense of our stories, releasing what no longer serves us, and living more fully in the present. I do this work best with people who are overly responsible, self-critical, and chronically nervous, tense, or guilty. You might identify as a perfectionist or people-pleaser, and might say you "grew up too fast." Common goals include getting in touch with alienated parts of the self, freedom from self-criticism, healing from emotional abuse and neglect, navigating difficult relationships with family, and relief from symptoms of PTSD, OCD, anxiety disorders, or depression.

If you are experiencing difficulties with anxiety, OCD, PTSD, or related conditions, I am passionate about helping you to change your life. I received my PhD & MA in clinical psychology from UT Austin, specializing in anxiety disorder research and treatment. I seek to provide a safe, warm, and affirming environment where your individual experience is validated. However, I do not believe that warmth alone is enough for competent treatment. When finding a doctor to treat a broken arm you certainly want a provider who is kind, but unfortunately even the most empathetic doctor will be ineffective if they do not know how to cast an arm!

I also have special training working with trauma and chemical dependency.
Relationship problems, struggles at work, and life events can challenge our ability to cope and ultimately to thrive in life. Patterns may emerge in your life that are confusing, that make you feel stuck, uncertain, and conflicted. Life transitions can tax our internal resources, and we may find ourselves lacking in fulfillment and happiness. Above all, I strive to support my clients to increase their life satisfaction, reduce their suffering, and strengthen their relationships and capacity for joy.

I specialize in treating anxiety and PTSD, using empirically supported and proven therapies.
“A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.” -John A. Shedd. Is PTSD or anxiety costing you more and more every day? Has avoidance of distress become your focus, rather than your family, friends, or goals? Are you finding yourself struggling to engage and be present in your own life? If any of these sound like you, are you ready to try something different?

I have advanced training in trauma & PTSD, anger management skills, anxiety, etc.
Is the noise in your head overwheming? Feeling angry, hopeless, or wanting to feel alive; to stop the constant "shit show" you've been living? Maybe you're tired of waking up every single day wanting to stay in bed. I get it; you're frustrated & overwhelmed; feel like you have no control & it's hard to trust or get close to anyone. And your self-esteem, boundaries, & relationships probably suck & that pisses you off even more. The lifetime of hits just won't stop coming. I get it & I can help - w/ the thoughts, images, shame, & demons yelling in your head. I can help you turn that shit off & help make life livable again.

I work with individuals who seek to truly understand themselves and what drives their behaviors. Exploring one’s inner world with curiosity and compassion makes up an important first step to healing. When an individual’s inner and outer selves are aligned and unacknowledged pain is surfaced, one is freed up to heal and live more fully and honestly. You may have a sense that bits and pieces of yourself have been suppressed or dismissed along the way. My approach to therapy will help you retrieve and re-integrate these important parts of yourself so that you can feel whole and fulfilled.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
