I have 22 years experience working with children/adults on the autism spectrum and with developmental disabilities .
The smallest change can affect your whole life. Life seems to continue even if we don't feel prepared for it. Moments of anxiety and depression can feel overwhelming. A new diagnosis or loss can create feelings that are difficult to control. Both past and present trauma can leave a lasting impact without support. Addiction can ruin relationships with friends and family. Any of these issues can cause problems in a person's life and therapy can create change in one's life. I believe all clients deserve to be in a place that is judgement free.

I specialize in issues of self-identity, body image issues, eating disorders, the LGBTQIA+ community, anxiety, depression, emotion-regulation, neurodivergence (autism, HSP, and anyone else who relates!), boundary work.
I strive to support clients in deepening their understanding of self, learning how to embrace uniqueness, and gaining greater access to one's nurturing inner voice. When we tap into methods of self-discovery and change that are tailored for us specifically, greater balance and peace within are possible, even with the constance of external chaos and change. My practice as a therapist speaks to anyone wanting to foster love, compassion, and hope in the present moment and beyond. I often focus on boundary work, mind/body connection, and techniques focused in mindfulness.

Since 2008, I've worked in both non-profit community mental health and very much for-profit private practice, which means I've gotten to work with all kinds of clients from different backgrounds and age groups to help address a remarkably broad spectrum of problems and concerns. Most of my work has been, and will continue to be, with young people- and while I've certainly loved every other minute of that, I am always eager (and occasionally desperate) to talk to another adult. My goal is for my clients to feel as comfortable and understood as possible, as soon as possible. From there, we can get to work.

I have a passion for serving people. I believe everyone deserves to become the healthiest version of themselves. I am passionate about helping people find their value and self-worth. I enjoy the process of helping someone discover the hard moments in life that have led them to their current challenges. Identifying those seeds that planted negative thoughts, unhelpful perspectives, and painful memories are the lightbulbs towards healing present wounds.

We all experience challenges and opportunities to grow and emerge stronger. I believe most humans instinctively move toward higher ground. Sometimes we need someone to walk alongside us who can help keep hope kindled and discover new, less painful, costly routes on the climb. I've had the privilege to journey with clients for over 25 years. My passion is working with those who've been marginalized or who experience themselves on the edges of community. I love witnessing clients do hard things, sit in difficult places, and face what scares them most.

For over thirty years, we’ve helped children with special needs, developmental delays, or autism face social-emotional & behavioral challenges.
You’re desperate but determined to do anything you can to help your child be ok, and honestly, to make it easier for everyone. You try your best to keep them calm and manage their emotions, but the slightest thing can set off another tantrum. Their meltdowns make you feel scared, ashamed & guilty, like you’re being judged for somehow failing your child. You seriously wish that life was less difficult for them– that they could handle changes more easily, cultivate friendships, & learn to follow simple directions. But try as you might, there just doesn’t seem to be any real progress. You’re out of ideas and starting to lose hope.

Experiencing the benefits of connecting and collaborating with others through the therapeutic process led me to a career in counseling. My work in education, family advocacy and experience in the areas of long term illness and disability have strengthened my desire to support others in their journey. I utilize various treatment modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to provide individual and family therapy. EMDR is used for a wide variety of needs and is a powerful tool for successful outcomes. For more information, see https://www.emdria.org/page/emdr_therapy

Currently will not be accepting new clients. I believe children can be helped through a transition phase, or a traumatic event through play. Children need to be able to have their safe place to go to when many things in their life are too difficult. The age of the child does not matter (0-18) can be effected in a positive way through therapy. This can occur through multiple forms of therapy. Many of the concepts used in Play therapy can be transferred to adolescents and adults while keeping family dynamics at the focus of the therapy process.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
