Thank you for reading my profile. It can be hard to ask for help. Over many years in practice I have studied many different theories and techniques of counseling and psychotherapy, so hopefully I can find ideas and tools to help you with whatever issues you bring. I do not claim to be the best therapist for everyone but I will do my best.

Many of us struggle with the tendency to isolate ourselves when we are in pain. We experience shame and guilt at the prospect of our stories being heard by others. So instead of leaning in to one another, we push away, leaving us unseen, forgotten and lonely. In spite of our fears, I believe we all have a deep, innate desire to be known and accepted in our stories, and it takes great courage to push past what we are afraid of to find the freedom that comes with sharing who we are.

"Life be lif-ing" is the statement that comes to mind when I think about the ups and downs, we experience in our lifetime. Many of us can relate to the overwhelming feelings of sadness or the constant feeling of anxiety. With life can come trauma and pain, which can cause anger, bitterness, and an array of different emotions. You may even think to yourself, "I'm not good enough," "Something is wrong with me," or "I can't do hard things?" As a trauma-informed therapist who utilizes a mix of CBT and EMDR, I target these beliefs and feelings and provide various coping tools to help clients grow and be their best selves.

Clients I see are typically wrestling with experiences that have impacted the way they view themselves, relationships, and the world around them. These experiences often leave us feeling wounded, unable to reconnect with ourselves or others. If this resonates with you, we might be a good fit for each other. As a wounded healer myself I seek to support you on your road to healing in a way that honors your unique set of values, beliefs, and cultural identity. I strive to take the time to get to know you, helping you to feel seen, heard, and understood. Who you want to be is possible. Your story, as it is, doesn't have to define you.

While life is always worth living, it doesn’t always feel that way. We are here to help you help yourself live the life you want — and need — to live. Not sure what that even means? We can help with that too. Our team offers a variety of solutions to a variety of problems/ troubles/sighs/ughs, etc. While each of our clients is literally unique (welcome to humanity!), at intake a lot describe themselves as lonely, dissatisfied, out of control, too up-tight, fine (forced smile), a mess, too much, not enough…perhaps some of that sounds familiar? Whether those fit exactly or not, if you are looking for answers, we're here to help.

Ever feel like the princess-and-the-pea: so acutely aware of something to the point of distraction and pain, but unable to get relief? And on top of that, no one else seems to get it? Or maybe you’re like Goldilocks: trying to find your “just right” of whatever it is you’re seeking, but your problem-solving keeps coming up short? Perhaps you believe fairytale analogies are irrelevant and are thinking, I just want help, literally. If any of this resonates, let’s talk.

I believe that people change through having new experiences. Whether it’s having a confidential space to share, feeling understood in a new way, becoming mindful of emotions and thought patterns, or taking the risk of vulnerability, change happens when we step out of the familiar. Sometimes we get to choose this, and other times it’s forced upon us by events beyond our control. Informed by my own experiences of pain, growth, and healing, I seek to come alongside my clients in the process of change as well as in the process of acceptance, recognizing that both are often needed as we move through life.

Day-to-day life can be exhausting. Maybe you were laying your child down for bed, and they said something that scared you or maybe your family is going through transitions, and you're worried about how they are responding to it. Through the therapeutic relationship, I join alongside children (ages 3-12), families, and individuals to provide an empathic, welcoming place where fears and hopelessness can be replaced with coping skills and a greater understanding of oneself. I work with children experiencing big emotions, behavioral/school difficulties, anxiety, self-esteem, and low social engagement.

Not accepting new clients
I'm a firm believer that we were never intended to do life alone, and that everyone has a story worth telling. But, so often shame, guilt or embarrassment, silences us, and our stories go untold. Oftentimes, robbing us of living life fully. It is my desire to foster an environment where clients feel safe and accepted as they pursue healing and growth. I'm humbled and honored to walk alongside of my clients during some of their most difficult times. My therapeutic approach is collaborative, relational, and empowering. I focus my practice on serving young children, adults of all ages, and families.

Depression and anxiety can really affect every area of your life. Reaching out to seek help is sometimes hard, but it is an important step in self-care and healing. My name is Christine Lawson, and in addition to anxiety and depression, I have worked with those who are in crisis due to self-harming behaviors as well as thoughts of suicide. With 15+ years of experience as a special education teacher before refocusing on counseling in 2019, I have also worked extensively with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities and behavior disorders. If you need a safe space to work on those things that are blocking your joy, I'm here for you.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 37403?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
