Hello...I'm Lianna (Lee-on-uh). I'm a clinical psychologist who works with young adults (21+) who suffer with ADHD, anxiety, depression and who are navigating identity challenges. I have experience working with LGBTQ+ youth and adults, specifically those who identify as trans, nonbinary and genderfluid as well as their caregivers. I work with young adults who are experiencing failure to launch out into the world whether that be an inability to choose their career path, or an inability to apply to or finish university. I teach skills, techniques, and set actionable goals so my clients can get closer to reaching their potential.

Although most of my experience has been with teens and young adults, I am open to meeting with clients of all ages and genders. Before becoming a social worker, I was a high school teacher for 23 years and worked as a social worker in a therapeutic school. I am particularly interested in supporting adoptees, sexual assault survivors, young people with learning differences, and LGBTQ+ youth as they heal from loss or trauma, discover their strengths, and construct an authentic identity. I have also run support groups for adoptees, trans/nonbinary teens, and parents of TGN teens.

Traumatic experiences and stress can cause disconnection between the body and the mind. Our inner lives as well as our outer lives become difficult to navigate. Life becomes about survival, cue sympathetic nervous system: fight, flight or freeze. Thriving and living a full life of purpose, meaning and authenticity can become an overwhelming challenge. I work with clients who are disconnected from themselves as a result of their eating disorders to create a deep connection to their thoughts, feelings and bodies in order to live big, full, authentic and juicy lives.

Beginning therapy and finding the right therapist for you can be challenging, but the right fit can bring about incredible change. Do you feel overwhelmed with the transition to parenthood or uncertain about your identity after building a family? Have you and your partner seen an increase in conflict or disconnection? Have you noticed persistent anxious thoughts or low mood, making it hard to enjoy this phase of your life? Do you find yourself being incredibly self-critical or at war with your own body and mind? Needing a place to share your thoughts without judgment? If any of these sound familiar, I may be the right fit for you.

Clients often reach out to me because they know that I practice from a Health at Every Size(R) framework and they want treatment that is not stigmatizing about weight. Adolescent clients and their families often seek me out because of my expertise doing Family Based Treatment.

Therapy is an invaluable opportunity for individuals and couples to learn about themselves and the relationships that they want to cultivate. Whether you are thinking about working through a particular issue, hoping to gain clarity and focus in future decisions, or considering a short-term "check-up", I will work with you in a safe, non-judgmental space that cultivates compassion, healing, and growth. I believe in the power of building on each person/couple's strengths and discovering, through a collaborative approach, new ways to adapt and grow.

In his 40-years' experience counseling individuals and families, Steph believes that a safe, trusting, and supportive environment is critical to confronting and addressing self-destructive behaviors and patterns. Although understanding how the past affects and shapes us is important, Steph's primary approach is to empower each person to accept that they have the ability and inner grace to create change, to move forward, and to decide upon a new pathway towards a more fulfilling present. His philosophy is that therapy is a journey with a clear destination... a stronger, empowered, and happier self.

The relationship we have with ourselves directly influences the relationships we have with others. Self love, or even meeting ourselves where we're at with self acceptance, can be incredibly difficult for various reasons. I assist my clients in nourishing their relationships with themselves through a mix of inner child work, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy techniques. I have worked with clients in various settings including outpatient office, intensive outpatient, and residential with a focus on trauma, anxiety, depression, bipolar, and borderline personality disorders.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
