I believe all people have the capacity to change and the power to do so. For over a decade, I have been assisting children, adolescents and adults to find their inner strength and identify personal goals for change and growth. I work with individuals who are struggling with depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflict and significant life changes. I also assist parents whose children are struggling behaviorally and emotionally with identifying their own set of coping skills and effective parenting techniques. I provide support to post partum mothers who are learning to navigate and transition to a brand new chapter in their lives.

My philosophy of therapy and change is that change comes from within. As a therapist, I ask a great deal in asking an individual to change, as change is an incredibly difficult task for everyone. The journey of change requires both the client and myself to work collaboratively throughout this journey. It is for this reason that the rapport between the client and myself is critical. I aim to provide all my clients with the space to explore their underlying feelings, thoughts, and behaviors so that they can engage in change.

Taharka Sankara holds a Masters of Social Work degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is licensed in the State of New Jersey in the fields of Social Work and Alcohol and Drug Counseling. Counseling experience spans across various treatment modalities with diverse populations. Many years spent counseling adolescent and adult males with addictive and criminal behaviors in individual, group and family sessions to address the underlying issues of trauma, substance abuse and other co-occurring behavior and mental health disorders. He works primarily from a solution-focused, strengths-based, client-centered framework.

Emotional difficulties block the path to a satisfying life that may manifest as depression, anxiety, bi-polar, anger/rage, psychosis and even suicidal thoughts. People find themselves trapped in conflict at work, relationships and with oneself. People may turn to destructive behaviors - substance/alcohol abuse, promiscuity, eating disorders or self-injury to find relief. Psychotherapy breaks these cycles by developing deeper insight of self and others while learning skills to help manage emotions and cope more effectively. I encourage a safe therapeutic relationship respecting the person's experience and confidentiality.

I have a focus on maternal mental health including postpartum depression and anxiety, traumatic birth, loss, and acclimation to new parenthood.
