I have been providing psychotherapy for over 30 years, and I am still humbled by, and passionate about the process of therapeutic change. I always work collaboratively with my clients be they parents, children, teens, adults, or athletes, and I strive to continually engage, diagnose, plan, and treat as effectively as I can. For me, working with children, teens, young adults, athletes, and pre-marital couples is most satisfying because of the preventive and early interventive nature of the work. I take pride in providing a place and a space where clients can relax, reflect, re-commit, and experience their desired transformations.

I do integrative work with adults and children. (If approached to work with a child, I first do a series of individual sessions with parents in order to scan for and process their own histories that may be feeding the triggers their children set off in them.) I am currently providing DBR (Deep Brain Reorienting) therapy shaped by my former uses of EMDR, Brainspotting, parts work (guided by structural dissociation theory), Theraplay, SSP and sand tray techniques. Lenses that guide my practice include trauma, attachment, consent, systems, anti-racist and loving justice. Practice hours are 9-5pm weekdays.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers I believe that the first step in moving towards the life you want is to accept yourself and your position as they are. This is not a request to settle, but rather, an invitation to look at the cards you hold. Only after accepting how things are can your next steps be determined. I can provide the space for you to express how difficult things are, while the healing relationship we build together will serve as the vehicle driving change. Seeking support is not easy, and you are stronger than you think by simply taking this first step.

As individuals, we spend our lives on a continuous expedition of self-discovery and personal growth, marked by highs and lows. I believe every individual is the expert on their own lives, and that each has innate strengths to draw upon. I have helped people grow, notice patterns, and gain insights, and thereby, to reclaim control of their lives. I appreciate that the past plays a big role in shaping who we are and how we view and manage situations, and so I respect each person’s upbringing, experiences, and differences: these make us unique! As such, I recognize no single model or intervention works for everyone – there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Instead, I tailor sessions and interventions for you and your specific issues, experiences, and needs.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
