I provide holistic psychotherapy and wellness counselling to individuals and couples (18 y/o and up). I recognize that working through difficult life circumstances and/or challenging relationships can be stressful and isolating, resulting in feelings of anxiety, low mood, poor coping skills or a general sense of being stuck in a cycle of unhealthy patterns. To move forward, it’s important to honour our lived experiences, accept that deeper emotions are appropriate in certain situations and build trust in ourselves to know the difference.

My ideal clients range in age from adolescents through adulthood, including couples and families. They may have a past history of trauma or grief, or perhaps they are presently struggling with symptoms of ADHD, life changes, or a breakdown of a key relationship. They may be feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure where to go next. They will be open to trying new ideas to help them on the path to feeling better, but will not be worried about talking to me when certain strategies that do not work for them, as they will know it is best that we use techniques that they are comfortable with and will use.

My work has a strong focus on attachment trauma, relationship stressors, anxiety and depression, substance use, and how the body and mind work in tandem.
Welcome, my name is Dawn and I have been working with individuals and groups in the fields of community-based development, education, health and wellness, and physical rehabilitation for over 20 years. Using narrative, trauma informed, and somatic approaches, I follow the philosophy that people are not their problems, behaviours, or past. If we can externalize and deconstruct the latter, by tapping into values and strengths, then there is potential to rewrite your narrative moving forward. I am dedicated in assisting you in relieving the stressors of holding onto stories that do not connect with your true self concept.

It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society. -Krishnamurti Although things are getting better in some regards, outdated societal pressures and norms, as well as modern technology and newly implemented ways of living are weighing heavy on many of us. Anxiety is at an all-time peak, addiction continues to climb and although we have more comforts than at any time in history, we are increasingly unhappy. Is the inside of your head feeling like an uncomfortable place to be? Working with a mental health professional can create a meaningful shift. Sometimes the harsh things we say to ourselves and our unconscious patterns can leave us trapped in a cycle of just trying to survive. Could the way you've learned to cope/survive be keeping you stuck or moving you away from who you want to be and how you want to live? Learning to see yourself, your life, and your patterns clearly can create opportunities for healing, growth, and more meaningful relationships.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
