While growing your family can be so exciting and joyful, it can also be filled with worries, anxiety, sadness, losses, loneliness and overwhelm.
Hello and welcome! Being a parent can be frustrating, lonely, draining and confusing. At the same time, being a child/teen is also so confusing, stressful and overwhelming much of the time. While these relationships can be a source of pain, our connection to each other is also essential to our well-being. I work with children, teens and parents to help understand, work through and heal from pain and rebuild joy through connection. I will spend a lot of time really getting to know you and your family’s story. I aim to be compassionate and non-judgmental, understanding we all have a good reason for why we do the things we do.

With 15 years of trauma work as an anthropologist, I've seen how modern life ties our value to achievement and how unresolved family trauma can keep us trapped in toxic, unfulfilling situations.
You have excelled in your professional life, often pushing yourself to the limit with perfectionist tendencies, yet deep down, you feel stuck, anxious, and disconnected from any real sense of joy or purpose. The pressure to perform masks deeper struggles with self-worth, unresolved family trauma, depression or anxiety. You often feel like no matter how much you achieve, it’s never enough. You're exhausted from trying to keep up the facade of having it all together and longing to cultivate deeper, more meaningful connections with the people who matter most to you.

My name is Tanya and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the province of Ontario. Parents I have worked with have often told me that they felt a great sense of relief after seeking help for their family challenges.
Worn out from never-ending conflict at home? At your wit's end over your kids' behaviour? Struggling to communicate with the people you love the most? Feeling guilty about your knee-jerk reactions to these problems? I can help. I teach individuals, couples, and parents of children between the ages of 6 and 18 the tools and strategies that work with today's families to * communicate effectively and easily, * equip you for any discipline challenge, * lower stress by getting your family working as a team... as well as * overcome guilt, anxiety and depression. You CAN create family harmony!

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
