Hi, I’m a client-centred counsellor and psychotherapist who helps young people and adults move through challenges they may be facing such as stress, relationship breakdowns, anxiety, depression and grief and loss. I also provide trauma responsive care. I work collaboratively with clients to help them feel safe, build resilience and to think and feel more positively about themselves. “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are" said Carl Jung. We are all born with unique gifts and potential. My believe is that, despite the trauma, loss and disappointments that you have suffered, you have the ability to heal and live a meaningful life. I love working with people that are committed to change and are ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. I consider it a privilege to be part of such a precious process and I offer my full commitment and genuine care to each client I work with. I help people to recover from substance abuse issues, trauma, depression, anxiety and life transitions.

Many people feel anxious coming to a counsellor for the first time.
Do you struggle with relationship difficulties, from intimate partners to friendships? Whether it be from infidelity, monogamy or navigating ethical non-monogamy to dishonesty, trust, boundary setting or simply the courage to express your needs. Have you been deeply hurt in a relationship and at a loss as to how to heal and where to go from here? Do you need to break free of people pleasing patterns and the anxiety and guilt around being authentic to your needs? Do you struggle with the courage to express your needs? These are just some of the many questions that life throws at us and they can often be complex issues to unravel...

From collaborating with different people through therapy over the years, I have noticed that even everyday people feel the effects of modern life on their mental health. This is because modern life comes with a lot of complexity and demands. Today, people pursue a combination of identity, lifestyle, fulfilment, achievement, supportive relationships, a work-life balance, financial gain, career progression, a bigger world purpose, and more. The pursuit is wonderful, however navigating these demands can strain our mental health over time.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
