My practice is closed to new clients for now. Licensed as a Mental Health Counselor in Washington, my education and training is in Jungian analytical psychology. Emphasizing the creative principle in healing and growth, this work inspires a devotion to being honest and willing to self-reflect, then make life-enhancing changes in behavior and attitudes. I specialize in listening to, and collaborating with, the generative spark that is in-born within us all. In my book, Healing With Nature, I present fresh perspectives on the nature of psychological transformations.

I believe that therapy is a place where you work through difficult issues with another individual, a counselor. The therapeutic relationship is different from relationships with friends and other natural supports. The counselor assists you in developing your own strength and wisdom that is within yourself.

Hi! Samantha Johnson, QCSW, LICSW. I started into counseling when I was just a youngen’, so now I have 14 years of experience! But don’t worry, I am not too old to understand. I work with people who are suffering. I understand how difficult life can get and want to do anything I can to try to help you find better days. I have worked in ‘discrete addictions programs’ to community mental health and few in between. I have been trained in Gestalt, Motivational Interviewing, Play Therapy, Reality Therapy and CBT. My approach is simple, where are you? And where do you want to be? Then is it just figuring out how to reach those goals.

I utilize a framework known as Reality Therapy with my clients, which is based on how each individual sees, perceives, and walks through the world.
My passion lies in working with both youth and adults alike and believe that counseling offers an opportunity to reflect on the current challenges that you may be experiencing in life, and working together with you on moving forward. In particular I have a heart and passion for working with youth and young adults of color. I believe that racial identity is linked to every aspect of daily lives for people of color and often leads to ongoing symptoms of stress and anxiety. I love working with individuals of all races and ethnicities, including folks who identify as children of immigrants.

With a holistic approach, I pull from DBT, IFS, mindfulness, and reality therapy to best meet your needs.
Everyone has a story to tell and I'm here to listen to yours, to provide a warm, nonjudgmental space to reflect on your experiences and create lasting positive change that matters most to you. Anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, and major life changes can often make us feel detached from ourselves and those around us. It is an absolute privilege for me to provide a space where you can feel supported and understood. I specialize in my work with adolescents and young adults, with extensive experience in this demographic. I also assist adults with anxiety and addiction and help couples improve communication.

I also provide both couples counseling, pre-martial counseling, and individualized counseling. I specialize in working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, Bi-Polar, ADHD/ADD, Autism, Intellectual/Developmental Disability. I use a variety of counseling approaches and understands there is no "one approach fits all." Those who have anxiety or are in crisis, as many people are, can affect how they view themselves. Therapy can help navigate unexpected changes in life, which may feel overwhelming. Improving and maintaining balance is the key to living a fuller life. Getting what you need to help you move forward can enable you to see a more optimal version of yourself. In my own life, I have tried many different ways to accomplish this and realize that not everything works for everyone!

Renew Your Mind! Consider how your filter impacts what you are experiencing in life. When we focus on negative, worry filled thinking as our normal we feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and hurt. In order to feel better we have to throw that old clogged filter away and insert a new, fresh, healthy one. This requires noticing what our thoughts are, practicing ways to reframe them, setting boundaries for ourselves and using our support systems and outlets to reduce the yuck that has built up.

After years of working alongside people struggling with substance use and mental health disorders, I have come to learn the importance of understanding each person as an individual with individual needs and the need for community and acceptance. I believe that each person can develop a deeper sense of self through viewing therapy as a journey that allows for learning, awareness, and self-compassion. We will work together in discovering your resiliency, to foster your sense of self, and to gain the confidence in learning and applying new ways to cope with life’s events.

Sometimes in life we all need a “companion on the journey,” someone to partner with us and help make sense of our experience, ease our pain, and support our goals. As a therapist, I am committed to providing a safe environment where individuals can identify their strengths, recognize unhelpful patterns, and live into their goals. Working from an integrative, client-centered approach, I seek to support individuals wherever they are on their journey and my approach is holistic, collaborative, and non-judgmental. I value cultural humility and look forward to working with people of all backgrounds, identities, and walks of life.

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
