I trust you to know when it is time to start talking to someone about the stress of changes. I like to do therapy with people that are open to investigating their "story", or narrative they say to themselves and others. Our story changes over time, it's OK to redefine ourselves. One of my goals with clients is to help them understand their unique capabilities and strengths to endure difficulties and find the healthiest, new path onward.

My approach is person-centered, utilizing mindfulness, interpersonal, narrative, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) methods, rooted in a trauma-informed, and holistic perspective.
Does your life feel like you’re playing a game without knowing the rules? Or that everyone else seems to know a secret that you don’t? Maybe you can’t seem to find a therapist that will understand your quirky references and unique style? If you’re ready to begin but don’t know how, or feel stuck, I can be the Fellowship to your Frodo - to fight alongside you, cry with you, laugh with you, and provide guidance and support when needed.

The therapy that I practice incorporates elements from the different branches of mental health treatment I have been trained in, including Solution Focused Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I specialize in the treatment of trauma related disorders, and I approach the treatment of trauma as a chronic illness to help my clients confront it's lasting impacts with compassion. This process gives us a chance to understand what we adapted to, how we adapted, and how that is showing up in life in the present. That understanding gives us more freedom to notice ourselves with less judgment. From there we can make more sense of confusing or conflicting feelings, and build a more grounded sense of who we are to navigate our relationships in a way that heals us as we go. I work with adults, parents, families, and teenagers.

I love working with adults and older adults. I often work with people on anxiety, depression, trauma, and difficulty with life transitions. My approach is supportive, warm, and nonjudgmental. My theoretical orientation is eclectic, drawing on humanistic, existential, and narrative approaches as well as skills-based frameworks such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical-behavior behavior therapy (DBT). I work with a feminist, social-justice focused, and antiracist lens to appreciate the ways in which people and their wellbeing are affected by systems of oppression and how this may challenge or connect us in therapy.

From the time I was very young, I have loved stories. I loved stories and reading, and most of all connecting with others over the stories I read. Ultimately, I developed a passion for narratives, for hearing and telling stories and finding new ways to understand them. As a counselor, I believe in the power of narrative as a way to bring healing and fresh perspective to our lives. Each person has their own narrative, and their own story to tell. Together, we will explore your story to heal from the past, identify barriers that may be stopping you from achieving your goals, and discover your authentic self.

Within this lens, I use the theories of internal family systems, Gottman, narrative, experiential, and music therapy.
I work with children, individuals, couples, and families. I believe that our experiences as individuals are greatly affected by our experiences with the systems that surround us; and navigating our place within those systems can prove difficult when done alone. My goal as a therapist is to provide a space that allows us to heal and strengthen relationship that we have with ourselves and our surrounding systems to create a sense of harmony and construct a life for ourselves that reflects the way that we truly want to live.

So, my therapy approaches are narrative, emotionally focused, solution-focused, and mindfulness-based.
Many of us seek therapy at different periods of our lives for different reasons, such as couple and family conflicts, losing loved ones, life transition issues, addiction, sadness, anxiety, and depression. We sometimes may not figure out what we are going through. Unknowns and uncertainties may increase in our lives and become unmanageable, or we are unable to fulfill our search for meaning. Therapy helps us cope with difficult and painful emotions, figure out what we are going through, and name it. Carl Rogers defines growth as any kind of movement toward “self-esteem, flexibility, or respect and compassion for self and others."

Each of us is born into an existing and developing story that impacts and shapes us, but not always in healthy or beneficial ways. The desire to be seen, heard, loved, and understood are fundamental needs that often, through no fault of our own, go unmet. Using modalities that draw from trauma informed psychodynamic and narrative therapies, I work with my clients to help them discover, understand, accept, and integrate parts of their story and themselves without shame.

I believe everyone has innate wisdom within themselves to overcome whatever obstacles are in front of them. I specialize in treating children, adolescents, and families that have experienced trauma and consequently suffering from anxiety, depression, attentional difficulties, sleep issues, developmental obstacles. Expressive therapies offers a unique way to language those issues using art, painting, clay work, journal writing, sand tray play and canine therapy, and they begin to externalize worries and concerns, crisis and trauma through symbols and mastery is gained. When families in pain begin to play together, perceptions of each other are changed, communication is accomplished and individuals experience their true potential.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
