I specialize in anxiety, ADHD, Behavioral Issues, Codependency, Coping Skills, Depression, Military/Veteran Issues, Mindfulness, PTSD, Stress, Trauma, and more.
I am Retired Army. I worked for 15 years with adolescents in mental health care for over 20 years. My hope is to save those in need of help from Suicide as it is increasingly rising in our Military and Black communities. Our Clinic provides a culturally sensitive therapeutic treatment environment. Receive the care you deserve. I believe that a firm understanding of an individual’s cultural background has a significant impact on the person's worldview and behavior. As a Company, we focus on the multi-cultures in our community. Now working with victims of Homicide in Group & Individual grief sessions.

I joined the counseling profession to support clients experiencing life's challenges while seeking support to navigate their journey toward healing. Clients may be young adults or adults grappling with past or current trauma, grief, ADHD, eating disorders, or life transitions. They might be first responders, active duty military, veterans or part of a veteran's family, survivors of religious trauma or sexual abuse, or individuals exploring their spirituality. I aim to listen, support, and empower my clients while walking alongside them through their healing journey.

Gentlemen, it’s a recognized human tendency to get “stuck” in our lives. Here’s the truth; you are never “stuck” with your present circumstances. The Game of Life is a psychological and spiritual journey and winning at this game requires you to change your play and learn to think differently and do things in a new way. The work of Stephen Pleasant Therapy is to help men break out from being “stuck” in life, resigned to producing results that are disappointing to them and others. The goal of Stephen Pleasant Therapy is to see transformative progress in men’s confidence, clarity, and full self-expression.

Currently accepting new clients in NC + MA. More info at www.shannondraper.co - Therapy looks and feels differently now. The traditional head nodding, passive engagement, and ‘how does that make you feel?’ is a thing of the past. I enjoy actively supporting and challenging folks in their process of reflection, introspection, and growth. My approach is compassionate yet direct. I work best with people who are asking questions, shifting relationships with themselves or others, and who are committed to showing up and/or learning more about their authentic, vulnerable, and values focused self.

Resentment, feeling stuck, restlessness, and anger - these painful emotions are indicators that it's time to make a change. The feelings we want relief from are deeply potent messengers that we are not living in our truth or purpose. You may already be aware of the need for change - feeling devalued in your relationships or in your career, feeling stuck in behaviors like drinking, over-eating, or numbing out with TV or social media - but the path out is unclear. It's possible to experience our emotions, set-backs, and struggles without feeling completely defeated, less-than, or unworthy.

I often work with patients to examine longstanding difficulties, both with others and within their own selves. Such patterns often leave people feeling misunderstood, empty, lost, unheard, unseen, taken advantage of, stuck, angry, or resentful. Feeling this way can leave you feeling disconnected from and distrusting of others; even those who you love and want to feel close to. Many times, these pieces can be extremely difficult and even can feel impossible to share. And that's okay. We will work together to address what feels important to you and at your pace.

Traditional talk therapy has limited benefits. Insight alone is not sufficient to generate change. Lasting change comes from addressing core beliefs which originate in childhood, and lead to habitual (and generally unconscious) ways of perceiving ourselves and the outside world. Thus 'our lives run us' rather than 'we run our lives'. Western culture tends to draw us away from ourselves to the outer world of materialism, competition and achievement. Mindfulness helps us to turn inward, attuning with the body, leading to the discovery of core beliefs that impede our ability to make healthy choices.

I’ve been working as a child & family therapist at least 10 years dealing with trauma and addiction. From there I branched out to work with adults. As a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I am passionate about healing and growth. I can work closely with you to provide a safe and confidential space for renewing and rewiring our brain. Are you struggling as a couple? We often overcompensate in our relationships often due to ignoring past hurts and fears, repeating the same patterns without even realizing it because it’s so familiar. And what we resist persists. Let’s work together to peel these layers to the beautiful real you.

Veterans Therapists

Why is mental health important for veterans and the military?

Veterans are more likely to face mental health challenges than the general public, and such mental health challenges can make it difficult for them to navigate day-to-day life. Improved mental health can result in better interpersonal relationships, lower levels of stress, and decreased dependence on substances, such as drugs or alcohol, for many veterans. Addressing common mental health conditions can also help facilitate recovery from physical health challenges that are faced by many veterans, such as chronic pain, physical injury, or poor sleeping patterns. Therapists trained in working with veterans can help address these concerns and help improve veteran mental health.

How can veterans get access to mental health support?

There are many resources for veterans to get mental health support, including through the VA or through their primary care doctor. Many service personnel are eligible for free or reduced-cost mental health counseling through the VA, depending on their service history and current income. Veterans can also utilize online directories, such as Psychology Today, or nonprofit organization resources like the Wounded Warrior Project, to find a therapist or other healthcare professional that specializes in their specific mental health needs. Veterans may also benefit from community-based groups that facilitate social connection and/or address specific concerns, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

What type of therapy is best for veterans?

Veterans may benefit from multiple types of therapy, depending on what mental health challenges they are facing. Veterans seeking therapy for anxiety or depression may benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which encourage clients to understand how their thought patterns influence their behavior. Veterans with PTSD may seek other more specialized forms of therapy to treat trauma symptoms, such as EMDR or exposure therapy. Many veterans and military personnel may also benefit from family or couples counseling to address the stress and adjustment challenges that can be associated with military life.

Can therapy for veterans help with trauma and PTSD?

Therapy can be highly effective in helping veterans with trauma and PTSD. Therapists specializing in veteran mental health often have extensive training and experience helping veterans navigate symptoms of trauma and can teach clients coping techniques to handle common symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. Some therapists may use talk therapy as their primary approach, while others utilize more structured therapy modalities in sessions, such as EMDR. Veterans can try multiple therapy modalities to find the best fit for them. Therapists can also help make referrals or connect clients with available resources, such as VA benefits, to help address other life concerns.
