Life can be hard and sometimes our difficulties are due to losses in life or the choices we make, but other times it is due to the choices that others have made that affect our own lives. In fact, Jesus tells us in John 16 that we will have trouble but be encouraged because He has overcome the world. At The Fountains Counseling Center, all of our counselors are committed Christians who have training in counseling, theology or both, who prefer to listen and understand rather than “preach” to you. We provide a confidential and safe place to face your struggles with the assistance of a professional counselor.

The sun fades and the study sessions carry on. One, two strolls across the quad are all that remain. We capture these moments not realizing they're finite, and anticipate commencement celebrations punctuated by summer plans. A seasonal urgency is beneath the surface prompting anxieties about our futures. Will I be fulfilled? Happy? We ponder. Juxtaposed emotions of choices and consequences are an adage so overtly simple, yet promptly an anxiety-producing quandary⸻but wait, the Ides of May are near. Book flights to emerald white sands and don't look back. Let's rummage through tedious life plans together. Reach out, and get in bloom.

I am a Registered Play Therapist through the Association for Play Therapy.
I enjoy working with children, adolescents and adults who are dealing with life issues that result in depression, anger, and an inability to function in their daily lives. I also enjoy working with couples and families. I believe that families function as a system and when one family member is out of sync, the entire family is disrupted. In my practice, I see children as young as 3 years of age. Play is the "language of the child" and Play Therapy allows children to work through their issues in a non-threatening environment.

I specialize in play therapy for ages 3-11.
I deeply enjoy working with children and adults who believe a better life is possible, but lack the tools, self-esteem or support needed to overcome old patterns and create a meaningful existence. The kids I support in the playroom learn to communicate, manage their behavior, exhibit confidence, problem solve and positively relate to others. Adults and guardians who find me create a life they are proud of after harmful relationships, traumatic events, or difficulties feeling comfortable in their own skin. It would be an honor to accompany you on life's journey of ups and downs as you heal the past and work toward a brighter future.

Sometimes things feel too difficult to bear alone. Maybe you are experiencing a challenging transition, struggling with the past, or dealing with strong feelings such as hopelessness, loss of self-worth, or isolation. As a counselor, I can offer a listening ear and a non-judgmental attitude as we navigate whatever you are going through together. If you are a parent seeking help for your child, I offer Child-Centered Play therapy for children ages 4-12. Children engage in counseling by interacting with the therapist and toys in a special setting. I team with parents and have parent consults regularly.

Play Therapy

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
