I am a relational, compassionate, and empathetic therapist trained in a variety of evidenced based therapies including (CBT), (DBT), Humanistic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, and Psychodynamic.
Each of us reach a point in life where we need to pause, breathe, and restart. For some of us that restart will happen on our own for others of us that restart will require someone a few steps ahead of us to reach back and give use a hand. I would be honored to explore the obstacles in your life, identify the changes you want and deserve while providing you the tools to create a life that you are proud to show the world.

I use psychodynamic therapy to help you understand parts of yourself that may be in conflict, such as desiring change, but being fearful that it isn't possible.
The possibilities for change, healing, and well-being often aren't trusted if you are dealing with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, or difficult circumstances. My goal is to provide support and safety for you to explore and understand problems with emotions, relationships, and painful past and present experiences. It is possible to come to terms with difficult issues, accept (not like) these human experiences, and move through them to change.

After completing a post-graduate fellowship in psychodynamic therapy through Harvard Medical School, I worked as a therapist at a number of non-profits.
I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst experienced in working with older adolescents and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems and struggles with family dynamics, mood disorders, substance abuse, college and life transition anxieties - and those helping family members with these problems. My style is warm, engaged and collaborative. While I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, my orientation is primarily psychodynamic, which means I start with the assumption that the sources of distress can be complex and often outside our immediate awareness.

My work is informed by an integrative approach, drawing from mindfulness-based, psychodynamic, CBT, and ACT practices.
There are moments in life when we feel stressed, lost, or overwhelmed. Feeling alone in our struggles can be disheartening. Whether you’ve come to this place because life circumstances have shifted, the day-to-day feels too strenuous to manage, or you’re hurting in some way, we all have unique strengths that can help us navigate these challenges. Therapy is one way to foster those strengths, and when we are given a warm and trusting therapeutic space, we can often find harmony and solutions to our struggles. I focus on helping individuals with anxiety, depression, stress, shame, grief, life transitions, or relationship struggles.

Mary works with individuals and couples to address attachment and emotional enmeshment, performance anxiety, moral injury and religious trauma, personality dynamics, and systems that cause people to feel stuck in life and relationships. Using an eclectic, psychodynamic approach to postmodern and constructivist theories, clients can expect to find meaning in problem solving and strengthen interpersonal relationships outside of therapy. In doing so, Mary integrates humor and everyday language in evidence-based therapies to educate clients along the way.

My training includes in a wide array of approaches, so I can draw from CBT's (including DBT, RO-DBT, ACT, exposure therapy, and CPT for PTSD), psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness techniques, depending on the needs and preferences of each individual.
Therapy can transform both our inner and outer worlds by making sense of our stories, releasing what no longer serves us, and living more fully in the present. I do this work best with people who are overly responsible, self-critical, and chronically nervous, tense, or guilty. You might identify as a perfectionist or people-pleaser, and might say you "grew up too fast." Common goals include getting in touch with alienated parts of the self, freedom from self-criticism, healing from emotional abuse and neglect, navigating difficult relationships with family, and relief from symptoms of PTSD, OCD, anxiety disorders, or depression.

I draw from attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and the experiential, psychodynamic therapies.
We can’t get around suffering sometimes in this life, but we can learn to live with dignity and grace, and we can know joy. Whether you are having questions of a spiritual nature, feeling stuck in your life, or needing to be free of deep and abiding pain, I stand ready to walk with you on the path of healing. I can say this with confidence because I have made this journey myself. My own experience with therapy helped me to understand that human beings are not machines that break and need to be fixed. They are beings that course correct; they mold and are molded by their environment.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
