Debra is a forensic psychologist that has devoted her professional efforts to helping men and their loved ones confront and conquer the long term effects of trauma on the male psyche.
Many of my clients are survivors of abuse. The type of abuse varies, but includes mental, emotional, sexual, and physical abuse. Often times these individuals want someone to listen to them without judgement and foe someone to believe them. When clients tell me they have experienced abuse, my response is the same. I thank the individual for sharing their story because I understand how difficult it is. It is especially difficult for my male clients. My clients are looking to understand and process the abuse in the hopes of healing and to have healthier relationships.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I specialize in empowering clients through the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, and loss.
¡SÍ se puede! As a child of immigrants, I grappled with dilemmas of self-identity amidst the pressures of acculturation and assimilation. I embrace cultural diversity. Nonetheless, as a Latina I continue to fight against societal and cultural norms. How do you merge conflicting expectations and be at peace? My personal success with these issues, along with formal education and subsequent training have made me a strong bicultural therapist. Thus, I truly believe that memories and emotions are best processed in the language you experience them in because they are inextricably linked and are part of our identity.

Do you feel consumed within the bounds of past trauma? Unable to find distance from the isolating, frightening, and repetitive patterns of thinking holding you captive? Unaddressed trauma can prevent us from reaching our highest potential, impacting our physical and mental well-being. My goal is to create a safe platform using unconditional positive regard and a non-judgmental attitude toward you and your experiences so there is room to process, heal, and reclaim your life on your terms while having the opportunity to redefine what safety looks like to you.

Together we can start the process of trauma recovery, allowing you to leave behind the thoughts, emotions, and ways of relating to others that haven't been serving you.
Life can be challenging enough when we don't get in our own way. As it turns out, many of us never learned how to identify and manage our emotions, relate to our worries and self-judgments with compassion, or navigate relationships from a lens that considers how our past experiences might influence how we connect with others today. If you are seeking another way to live, with less suffering and more peace, you are in the right place.

I am trained in Trauma and chronic trauma modalities, and my treatment lens are attachment theories, and narrative therapies, reflective modalities for training and supervision.
Most importantly, people who are open to understanding and exploring how their world view can be expanded. Those who are motivated to live an authentic life and move beyond coaching and behavior modification to reflecting on the paths that led them to the want something different. Those who seeking healing and self-knowledge and how that intersects with relationships. To be willing to change the narrative of their lives. Mostly, those that are brave enough to walk through the door.

I am glad you're looking for therapeutic support in times that are drastically impacted by the capitalist mindset and inequality. Life’s external factors such as stress and trauma experiences including but not limited to childhood abuse, physical abuse, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, racial and social traumas as well as anti LGBTQ+ policies are taking toll on our bodies. These show up as fatigue, sadness, anxiety, overthinking, thoughts of self-harm, and disables us from our lives. In such times we all can use trauma-informed and nonjudgmental professional support to help us heal from root causes of these symptoms.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
