When seeking care, nothing is scarier to transgender and non binary folx than winding up with a provider who is poorly informed about the issues that face our community. From understanding discrimination and harassment and the various intersectionalities of our personhood to the process of transitioning and navigating this process, having a mental health provider who is affirming and competent makes a huge difference, whether your current mental health concerns are or aren't related to your gender.

The world is a tough place right now. We're all living in a state of constant stress. When we think we have it all figured out, life throws us a curve ball, political ups & downs, the death of a loved one or taking care of an ill loved one. Imagine adding a layer of anxiety or depression. What about introversion? Just for fun, let's also add a layer for people that identify as LGBTQ+. Coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non binary, or gender fluid can be confusing for your straight, cis family and friends. Whether you identify with this because you experience this regularly or someone you love feels this way.

Hi there! I'm a transgender Licensed Professional Counselor (Texas) and EMDR practitioner who specializes in treating attachment wounding and complex trauma for adult LGBQT+ cllents. There are so many parts to our experience: Trauma that’s related to our families-of-origin (for many of us, our families were our first abusers); anxiety, perfectionism, and masking that comes with trying to prove our worth in the world; spiritual trauma from histories with shame-based religious systems; abusive or exploitative relationships, losses that we never had skills to address. The worst abuse is often what we've done to ourselves.

I hold a PhD in Clinical Sexology, dual certification as a Sex Therapist (AASECT & IICS), and certification as a Queer and Transgender Affirming Professional.
Finding the right therapist is sometimes the hardest part of the counseling process. The challenge of matching a therapist's personality and approach to counseling with a client's needs can sometimes feel like trial and error, but is a vital part of the process. I believe that the start of any new relationship, therapeutic or otherwise, begins with building rapport and simply becoming comfortable with each other. Once established, the real work can begin.

I specialize in all areas of Human Sexuality and I offer a sex positive approach to counseling as well as being queer, LGBTQ, Transgender, kink/BDSM, consensual non monogamy, and abortion affirming.
Living in the US today can be scary for a number of different reasons, and it can make one feel alone and hopeless. No one gets through life without hurt, but having someone who truly sees you and can acknowledge that you matter can go a long way in easing some of that hurt. There are elements in life that are embarrassing or even shameful to talk about, or even admit, and it can be such a weight off to be able to talk about that stuff in a compassion driven, non judgmental atmosphere.

Therapy is a safe place to explore challenges in our lives & find strengths that we never knew we had. It has the potential to lift us out of our rut so that we can finally make the changes we've longed for. Whether you are working to decrease your anxiety, unmasking and living authentically, changing careers, exploring your gender or sexual identity, or trying to change your relationships, therapy can be a great place to get a fresh perspective & face these challenges with a champion by your side. My own identity as a multiracial, queer, gender nonconforming therapist enables me to understand clients who feel like outsiders.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
