Dr. Charles E. Martin is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Knoxville, TN. He is currently accepting new patients, and both day and evening hours are available, as well as Telehealth sessions. Dr. Martin has been in practice over 40 years working with adults with a wide range of problems. Dr. Martin's treatment approach is solution-oriented. Often described as gentle and easy-going with a good sense of humor, Dr. Martin's counseling style is amiable and courteous. He understands that many people are quite anxious when they begin counseling and he makes the initial sessions comfortable.

My ideal client is one who is curious about his/her emotional life. My treatment philosophy is to engage a person in an exploration of their problems in ways that can lead to better relationships, feelings about themselves, and overall day-to-day functioning. My patients should find relief from their symptoms - whatever they may be - while making changes that will help them stay emotionally healthy and symptom-free in the long-term. It is my belief that therapy is a growth process that can only happen by collaboration and genuine trust between patient and therapist.

I am passionate about assisting individuals and families in growing to their fullest potential. I do not view an individual's problems in a negative manner but believe that many obstacles can be used as opportunities to bring about positive changes and personal growth. A primary focus of my work history includes, working with clients and couples who have experienced depression, anxiety, loss and trauma. I have past experience working as a group facilitator in an intensive outpatient program for eating disorders and specialize in working with clients who struggle with disordered eating patterns.

I enjoy working with children and families who are struggling to understand each other and get along. A lack of communication and an inability to express feelings appropriately are often the main issues in these relationships. I work with not only the children/teens to increase their abilities in these areas, I also work with the parents and siblings to help them understand how they can help the relationship be less turbulent.

I welcome people with a wide range of life issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and general stress, as well as children and adolescents with behavioral, emotional and attentional problems. My approach is tailored to your needs and goals, but usually includes a focus on understanding how you got where you are. This kind of insight can be vitally important in figuring out a practical way to get to a better place in life. When working with kids and teens, I always involve their parents to some extent, so they can better understand and help their children.

I provide psychological evaluations for children, adolescents, and young adults for a variety of clinical and educational difficulties. I offer diagnostic and testing services for a wide range of Neurodevelopmental Disorders including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disorders, and other behavioral and educational concerns. By using a variety of assessment methods, my services are helpful in providing a clear diagnostic picture for individuals who may have a combination of educational and behavioral difficulties or difficult diagnostic features.

Taking new clients. I am in network with Aetna, Cigna, and Optum/UHC. Only EAP through Optum and Cigna, at this time. There is a major difference in 'feeling alone' and 'being alone'. Loneliness in the midst of crisis can feel suffocating, especially in our marriages and/or relationships. The counseling process can be a therapeutic alliance when all else feels lost and hopeless.
