Do you feel like you’re not good enough? Do you question who you even are? Maybe past hurts keep you held back. Don’t know where to start or who you could even be outside of the trauma or hardships you’ve faced? These can be scary questions to ask yourself and scary memories to discuss. Good news is you’re not alone. I believe the only way out is through. I have experience working with many in this exact situation and have been on my own journey of self-discovery. Our thoughts shape our reality and with some effort and guidance it is possible to change our thought process and turn our life in the direction we want to go.

Graduating from Loyola University with a Master's degree in Theology and Marriage and Family, I focus on individuals impacted by addiction, infidelity, relational crisis and trauma. I have been a Program Director in a jail offering substance abuse treatment and a CEO and Clinical Director of a domestic violence center. As a federal government researcher, I developed an addiction curriculum used in treatment centers across the country and have been a featured therapist on the Oprah Network. I sincerely believe in and support long term recovery from addiction and trauma. Both my husband and I embrace a sober lifestyle.

Trauma comes in many forms including but not limited to childhood abuse, domestic violence/abuse, medical trauma, combat/first responder trauma, traumatic grief, narcissistic abuse, religious trauma, fire, and hurricanes. Unresolved trauma symptoms can look like anxiety, depression, irritability, angry outbursts, mood swings, people-pleasing, and codependency. It IS possible to neutralize old issues and traumas (or “programming”) so they are no longer triggered in the present. If you are in recovery, neutralizing old visible and invisible trauma triggers can enhance your recovery process and make it more manageable. I can help you.

How do I stop the negative chatter in my head? We often experience negative self-deprecating thoughts that have a huge impact on the way we feel and behave. These thoughts make us feel sad, lonely, angry, or anxious, leading to wrong choices or impacting our relationships with the people we love. Navigating through these thoughts and feelings is very difficult. However, you can learn to positively restructure the way you think of the world and yourself. Your life experience is unique and you have the opportunity and capacity to live your best life.

As a doctoral-level psychologist practicing in Florida for over 20 years, my approach to helping clients make lasting improvements in their lives includes providing hope for change, research-based techniques and practical problem-solving skills. Specific and customized treatment goals are developed collaboratively, beginning in the first session. Why choose a psychologist rather than a counselor or therapist? A psychologist's expertise is more in-depth. Additionally, an important aspect of a great therapeutic relationship is the fit with your provider, feeling safe, hopeful, respected, and motivated to take the steps to grow.

At any time, you can rethink your life and reinvent yourself. In a fast paced modern world, we are finding that more and more people are experiencing challenges such as depression and anxiety. Many of them choose to self medicate through habits that can develop an addiction. Many more choose to relay on prescribed medications only. However, studies have shown that the greatest chances for success are achieved by combining medication and therapy.

Whether struggling with a specific challenge in life or relationship, or continuing your growth on the ever-expanding spiritual path of life, it is my passion to share this journey with you. I believe strongly in the mind-body connection and utilize mindfulness-based techniques (such as meditation, visualization and body awareness) united with elements of more traditional modalities. Encompassing a holistic approach to therapy, all aspects of the client's life are included to increase balance and self-awareness, identify personal therapeutic goals, and then to co-create the most enriching path toward optimal health.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
