My therapeutic approach is integrated, combining: Depth Psychology, IFS, Attachment Theory, PhotoTherapy, Art and Narrative Therapy, Exposure and Response, CBT, and Women's Spirituality.
I am a warm, compassionate psychologist who practices therapy with a "power with" rather than a "power over" approach. I have personal experience with many life events including single parenting, divorce, caring for elderly parents, and overcoming depression. I specialize in treating eating disorders, body image, identity issues, depression, trauma, anxiety, and cancer related distress. I have extensive experience working at the residential & outpatient levels for eating disorders, and provide supportive therapy for not only the client, but for the parent or significant other who supports them.

I believe our emotional and physical health are inseparable. In psychotherapy, we will explore how your brain, emotions, body, and spirituality work together in creating moment-by-moment experiences within you. My background in neuropsychology and psychotherapy will guide our work in an integrated and holistic framework. As a registered psychologist (PSY 33916) specializing in neuropsychology, I offer neuropsychological assessment, individual psychotherapy and cognitive remediation for adults (age 18-64), in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Currently, I provide teletherapy services only, to residents of California.

Your challenges aren’t in vain – they can be springboards into the life you dream of. Maybe you have felt overwhelmed, stressed out, anxious, sorrowful, or despairing. These difficult emotions can indicate that transformation, power, and aliveness are at hand. You just need the right guide to help you move through them to that fulfilling, happier life that you long for. I’m skilled at helping you explore your own depths – even the scary places – to find your hidden treasures. Your relationships, work, and sense of self can become more authentic and fulfilling – even when imperfect. And you’ll discover your inner resilience, too.

Relationships can be hard. Partners struggle with communication, conflicting parenting styles, sexual expressions... Life's challenges, hurtful fights, history of trauma or infidelity make it difficult to sustain trust and closeness. How can you create desired connections, and not lose yourself in the process? How can you be true both to self and to your partnership? I invite you to explore these questions together with empathy and curiosity, letting go of habitual judgments, self-deprecation, and shame. I work with individuals, couples, and families. Both traditional and alternative lifestyles are welcome, and no issue is a taboo.

I am a licensed psychotherapist and consultant specializing in individual psychotherapy and couple's therapy. I have extensive experience in the areas of PTSD, childhood wounding/abuse, and relational attachment issues. I believe everyone deserves a safe, secure space that welcomes all of them. Together we will explore the parts of yourself that seem harder to navigate, and over time we can develop a new understanding of the internal walls that hold you back from growth and a sense of connection.

In today's tech-driven environment, the pressure to succeed can be overwhelming. Striving to achieve measures of success that do not include what is personally meaningful may heighten stress and anxiety. Therapy is an opportunity to examine the relationship between external messages and one's inner truths. It also supports the process of creating a life that is in harmony with who one truly aspires to be.

For over 24 years, I've collaborated with people to resolve their psychological trauma, phobias, anxiety & stress as well as maximize responses to their medical diagnoses, treatments & conditions. This clinical focus stems from both a personal medical challenge since age 12 and research on treating women with breast cancer and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet Kaiser research (1998) finding 70% of primary care visits are driven by mental, emotional and relational issues highlights how mind and body are interwoven for each of us. This interplay provides leverage for preventive medicine, for responding to illness and for maximizing peak performance.

I'm a Psychologist with an Integrative perspective, comfortable working with a variety of types of people and problems from a variety of perspectives. It is as important to be able to work towards change in the present, as it is to revisit and understand how one's developmental history may be influencing present issues or repeating patterns. I have found truths in many theoretical approaches, and as much from studies outside of Psychology as within it.

Most people benefit from having a trusted and trained professional to confide in and collaborate with - to make changes, deal with emotional pain, and search for understanding and meaning. Humans are complex beings and life is full of challenges. We all create "protective measures" to help us cope with difficulties we have encountered. Unconscious relational patterns, expectations, and beliefs about ourselves and others develop. Unfortunately, many of these ways of being interfere with creating satisfying lives and relationships. Our habituated patterns can be constricting, or lead to troubling behaviors or symptoms.

Life is a journey full of ups and downs. It doesn't come with a roadmap, and at times we all find ourselves in difficult situations. As your therapist, I will guide you and support you through these rough times by illuminating the path to healing and wholeness. In the face of life's challenges, our tendency is to cope, adapt and get by. Unfortunately some of these coping mechanisms are outdated and no longer serve us, so we go about life just "getting by". Rather than merely "surviving" you could be thriving.

I believe that we grow through our struggles. They often point to parts of ourselves that are denied or have been banished to adapt to our early environments. In learning how to relate to and integrate more of our wholeness, we experience a greater capacity for and flexibility in relationships as well as a greater resiliency in their lives. I work with clients to increase awareness of themselves and their patterns, both healthy and unhealthy, to have greater choice and freedom in the way they live, and to discover lifepaths that authentically express who they are.

Everyone needs help sometimes. In therapy, we join together to achieve your goals. Many of my clients are working on issues with anxiety and depression brought on by life transitions and past traumas. Together we examine patterns of thinking and behaviors that are no longer serving you. New coping skills help clients tolerate their feelings and improve their interpersonal communication.

As a therapist, I want to work with people to help them to get unstuck. There are a lot of different ways one can be stuck, physically (pain), emotionally, socially, professionally, with a substance and many others. Like spinning your tires when stuck in the mud. It is the wrong thing to do, but it is the easiest thing to try when you are alone. Getting unstuck most times requires some help. That is where therapy can come in handy. Please contact me for a brief consultation to see if I can be the right person to help you.

You’ve always had a sense that something crucial is missing, like a song stuck on a note that never resolves. Sometimes you feel disconnected from your authentic self, unable to put words to feelings, lost in a fog of uncertainty. At other times it feels like you’re too much for others and don’t know how to let it out without feeling like a burden. This existential dread has been a constant companion, but you’re sure there’s more to life and that some piece of the puzzle is missing. You long to remove this familiar barrier from impacting your ability to relax, to focus, to show up more as yourself in relationships.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
