Hi There! My name is Sydney Bartel, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Colorado. Finding the right fit for your mental health journey can be daunting. Therapy is vulnerable and powerful, and finding a person to support you in this is important. I firmly believe being a therapist is not about doing something for the client, but being someone for the client. I am here to be that someone for my clients.

I use somatic-based practices, like Brainspotting, to help you make this connection, changing your thoughts and feelings.
Book a consult instantly through my website link in my profile! Do you have difficulty finding motivation to get out of bed in the mornings? Is it hard to allow yourself to rest and relax? You might even find yourself stuck between these situations without a middle ground. Perhaps you experience poor sleep, flashbacks, jumpiness, or difficulty concentrating? These symptoms can make it difficult to function. Imagine, for a moment, an alternate universe where you didn’t feel this way. Now, imagine this doesn’t have to be an alternate universe - people can find comfort, peace, and joy in life again!

Honoring the body as a rich source of information and site of healing, I integrate traditional talk therapy with trauma-informed, mindfulness-based, somatic work, drawing on my training in the Hakomi Method and as a 500-hour certified yoga teacher.
While most people come to therapy with a problem or struggle that needs immediate attention, we often find that unraveling the present challenge can lead us into deeper work, revealing underlying patterns or beliefs that limit us or cause us pain. I am here to support you in working through what you are facing today, as well as diving deep into that quieter layer of experience that pulls at your heart, mind, and body. Together we can attend to your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, and develop your sense of self-trust and knowing. Above all, I aim to meet you where you are and shape my approach to your needs as each session unfolds.

I have two years of NVC (non-violent communication) group work as well as Somatic Experiencing (SE) experience.
My background before becoming a therapist involved healing modalities for the mind, body and soul. Knowing how powerful working with the whole person can be, I directed my studies to understand how traditional therapy could interact with the brain and body and heal relationships through connective communication. I work well with individuals of all ages hoping to address emotional wounding, mental health struggles, sexual abuse, faith transitions and other trauma. I thrive working with couples who want to collaborate on healing their relationship, addressing wounds, and building communication. My practice is LGBTQIA?2S friendly.

My approach encourages resolution at deeper levels than traditional talk therapies by working experientially through somatic (body-centered) awareness.
I offer a compassionate approach to psychotherapy that works through the body to bring unconscious information (often held as tensions, chronic illness, nervous system disorders, anxiety, depression, nightmares, low self-esteem and inabilities to function at full capacity)into conscious awareness, facilitating deep and lasting changes. Our childhood wounds and traumas become blocks to the manifestation of our purpose/gifts. I honor the inherent wisdom of my clients and help them find authentic expression of their gifts. My strengths are my ability to use my intuition to help clients "put the pieces together," and my own personal experience with resolving trauma.

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
